If you do/did bottle feed your twins...

So I've been tandem feeding my girls so far, but we've been having some issues. It seems as though one of them prefers formula, and does much better with it. I have a feeling that if I start giving her only formula, sooner than later I will start giving her sister all formula too.

Anyway, if you bottle/formula feed/fed your twins, did you feed them at the same time? If so, did you just prop them both up in boppys and feed them? (This seems like it would be the easiest, but maybe you have a better way to do it?) Also, what do you do about burping during the bottle? Does the twin that isn't getting burped or fed get super fussy/start crying while they are waiting 'their turn' or is there an easy solution to this, too?

I have literally been going on a couple hours of sleep a day trying to figure out whats wrong with my girls, and I think that it's something with my milk as the formula has made Ariana seem like a totally different, more comfortable baby. I just want some tips on how to make bottle/formula feeding both of them as easy as possible.

TIA!

Re: If you do/did bottle feed your twins...

  • There is a post titled "Twin Moms: Tell me your methods for when you're double teamed... " a few posts down that answers this same question :)

I bottle feed both of my girls, I feed them at the same time to keep them on the same schedule. There are many ways to do it, whichever is most comfortable for you. I think the most popular is boppy pillows and propping. You can take turns burping them. GL!

ETA: Sorry wrong post title here the first time, corrected it!

  • In the beginning, I tried to tandem feed them by propping in Boppies, car seats, bouncies seats, etc. and it always just resulted in someone screaming or puking or just plain misery for everyone involved. Finally, around 4 weeks, I decided that wasn't working, and I started feeding them both individually while the other sat in the boppy or in the bouncy. That worked SO SO SO much better for us. Yes, it took way longer, but we all didn't end up in tears at the end of each feeding session. In the beginning, feedings and changing would take at least an hour b/c DD was a VERY slow eater.

  • We have never tandem fed.  we have always fed T first and Z after ..... that way the time between feedings is the same for both.  Once they can hold their own bottles we will feed at the same time

  • I propped them up on a couch pillow and tandem fed.  By the time I did this, they were good with only being burped at the end of the bottle.  If one is crying like they have a big burp, I burp that baby first.  This works well - I never saw the reason to spend money on boppies.

  • I did eventually figure out that feeding them both at the same time was key. I would feed them in their bouncy seat and hold the bottles for them. I would burp one and give the other the paci so they didn't freak out. And then switch. When they got to be about 8 or 9 weeks I began propping the bottles so that one would drink while I burped the other. It worked out well beause they drank at differing speeds.
  • I feed them individually.  Yes, it takes twice as long to feed but to me it felt like they have to share my time so much that at least during mealtimes they can have special mommy snuggle time alone.  I do have to occassionally tandem feed them and then I'll sit them in their high chairs or bouncy chairs.  I could never figure out how to prop them in the boppy so their heads weren't going everywhere.
