Job Searching

I am an unemployed teacher and have been interviewing but I feel guilty.  Is it fair to accept a job before they know I am pregnant?  I feel like if they know they will have to find subs for me they won't bother to hire me.  I really need a job for a few months to put money away for the baby.  Am I crazy?  Am I doing the right thing?  Advice please!

Re: Job Searching

  • I'm pretty sure that legally, they can't not hire you just because you are pregnant. It would probably be easiest to make sure that happens if they don't know you are pregnant, but I can see that you might feel like you are "lying" if you don't tell someone who extends a job offer. I guess I would wait until they extended an offer and then tell them.

I agree.  Even though they can't NOT hire you because you're pregnant, in reality they might keep that in mind.  It's not going to affect your ability to be a good teacher (other than being out) so I just wouldn't mention it.  Good luck!

  • I just accepted a job today and didn't tell them.  Not planning on telling them until after training which is about a month.  I can understand but I say keep searching and dont share if you dont feel comfortable doing so.
  • I took a different approach. I felt really bad that it would be my first year and most likely would've been in a grade with standardized testing. In Texas we take that pretty darn serious! And I know how the principals at the school I really want to work in would be REALLY pissed!

So I settled for subbing in their district. I know that option might not be feasible for you but I couldn't live with that under my conscious.

I know exactly what you mean.  We just moved and once I found out I was pregnant, I didn't look for a job anymore.  I decided I could substitute in all the surrounding schools.

This is what I am doing. I told them right off that I am pregnant and they didn't care. Just said to make sure I fulfilled the required monthly work.

  • We just had a lady start at my company in the accounting group . . . she didn't say that she was pregnant until the offer was signed and they all said ok . . . checked to make sure that disability would cover her and everyone moved on.

I don't think that it is lying . . . it's no different than starting a job knowing that you have a vacation planned in the near future. But like the other posters said, even though it's not supposed to be held against you in the hiring process, it's still a potential negative.

If they like you enough to hire you then they like you enough to find a sub for 6-12 weeks. My company is owned by a company in France . . . over there maternity leave is 6 months!
