Food Allergy

Need help please

My DD#2 has had diarrhea for the past month (the past 2 weeks have been more consistent though).  She wakes up every morning with diarrhea without fail.  Usually 2-3 more throughout the day.  The past 2 weeks I have done rice, chicken, bananas, apples, etc....anything binding and bland.  No difference.

She is on Similac Sensitive and has been since birth.  She's had no "real" problems with it.  She did projectile vomit about 3-4 times between 0-3 months, but thought she was just overfed.  Since then, she's always spit up.  Still is, even though she's on solids.  She's always had "soft" stools.  They were never formed.  Even as she has gotten older.

She's getting a rash now, obviously, but I've noticed a patch of eczema near the banding around their leg part of the diaper.  The Pedi confirmed that for me which was a red flag.

Brief background...I have ulcerative colitis and dairy intolerance.  DD#1 was put on soy after severe issues with regular formula from birth.  She had severe eczema all over her face until we switched to soy.  She also had eczema when we started WCM and mild constipation.  She's now on 2% cow's milk and doing great.

I really want to just take DD#2 to get food allergy testing and figure this out instead of making her suffer any longer.  She's still happy as a clam, normal fussiness, still STTN and 2 naps everyday, eating well, etc.

So confused and thought it would be good to get feedback!  Not sure if I should just switch formulas this late in the game and give it a try and if there are no changes, go from there, or if I should be aggressive and find out for sure. TIA!

Re: Need help please

  • Its def worth looking into.  Loose stools are often a symptom.  Call your pedi and ask for a blood test.  Also you might try switching formulas to say Alimentum or Nutramigen to see if it makes a difference.  Good Luck!

  • Thank you! I left a message for my Pedi and our Pedi Allergist, so we'll see what they say.  At our appt this morning, the Pedi said she thinks it's a virus, but how can a virus last for over a month and each week get worse?

As I'm typing this, DD#2 just had her bottle and she's already having a bowel movement :(

Oh and does the Alimentum have a terrible taste like the Nutramigen?  I remember the Nutramigen tasting terrible when we tried for DD#1.

  • sorry you're going through this. I would try switching formulas (even though it's late in the game) and see how she does after a few weeks.

I would get a referral to either a GI or an allergist (or both).  She should definitely be tested to rule out any major issues.  I would also get her tested now before seh starts eating more solids.

Also -it's very common for allergies to creep up at any moment.  My son was tested for soy at 8 months and it was negative.. than at 12 months he began to react and was tested positive on his next RAST test.  So it's very possible to develop reactions after 8 months.. personally i think it's even more common b/c your introducing more foods.

    good luck!

  • Thanks for your help.  Interestingly enough, she didn't wake up with diarrhea this morning and the only thing I did different was stop bananas yesterday and she only had rice cereal in the morning, but then stopped that as well to resume her normal diet per our Pedi's recommendation.  She had her normal formula, but for lunch and dinner I gave her Squash w/ apples and then for dinner she had Sweet Potatoes, Turkey w/ Veggies.  After her bottle last night she was gassy, but then went right to bed and STTN.  She didn't wake up with diarrhea, like I said, and then after her morning bottle she had a bowel movement, but it was much more formed.  Now I'm starting to think rice and bananas?!

Waiting to hear back from the Pedi and Pedi Allergist today and definitely making appointments!
