Identical or Fraternal!?! TWINS! :)

My husband & I just found out we're having twins this past Thursday!  We heard the babies' heart beats and they are strong!! Baby A's is 127 and Baby B's is 121. :)  I'm very nervous because I'm only 7 weeks a long and I have read some horror stories about losing one twin.... but I have faith everything will be okay.  I'm so excited!

Can anyone tell me is it possible to tell if the twins are identical or fraternal while pregnant??

  • Did your doctor mention how many placentas he/she saw?

Did you hear anything like mo/di, di/di, etc?

  • Sometimes the thickness of the membrane between the two can be an indicator, though not a sure sign.
  • Congrats on the twins!    Did they happen to tell you if you have one placenta or two?

  • Congratulations! My doctor first told me, "There's two in there" followed by "But baby b looks small and it may vanish" Talk about being scared and nerve wracking. As it turned out though, Baby B didn't vanish, and he is fine! (He tried to pull over the end table, toppling the lamp on his head, this morning!)

  • One placenta = identical

If you find out the genders and they are B/G, they are definitely fraternal.  If you end up with same sex di/di twins, you may need a DNA test to know if they are ID or fraternal.

  • My doctor told me she the radiologist did not indicate whether they could see two placentas or not... she put a call into her to check and if they cannot tell she is sending me to a high risk specialist for a repeat ultrasound.

From what I read if they share a placenta they are identical?  But I also read that identical twins can have seperate sacs and seperate placentas - it all depends on when the zygote split after conception...

  • Congratulations!!!  We just found out on Thursday too that we are having twins.  We were shocked beyond belief!  My doctor told me he thinks they are fraternal because there are two seperate sacs, I don't think the placentas are developed enough just yet to know for sure.  I am 8 weeks today and so excited!!!
  • Do you have an u/s picture?  Here's the helpful diagram:

  • Thanks Haven1 for posting this.  I just found out I'm expecting twins and the u/s looks like the mono/di graphic.  Plus, the only thing I remember the tech saying (the rest was lost in the shock) was that their separate sacs are like they live in the same house, but had separate rooms.

Sounds like mo/di for sure!  Congrats!  I really wish u/s techs would be more specific with "you are having ID twins", because most people have no idea what a fuzzy picture means.

    Congratulations on your twin pregnancy!

You should remove your identifying information from the ultrasound picture.

     Good luck:)

Yours look di/di, so that means there is a 1 in 9 chance they are identical but most likely they are fraternal.  This is what mo/di look like at 10 weeks.  Same gestional sac = one placenta = identical.  If you look close you can see a thin dividing membrane which means they are in separate amniotic sacs.  Congrats on your twins!

  • based on your U/S pic I would say they're Fraternal, only because they are seperate sacs. Mine looked the same way and I'm expecting fraternal twins :)

    Congrats!

  • at our fist u/s we were 7wk 4 d the tech said they were probably fraternal since thats most comon but when I went back for another u/s with OB they would know more once Im further along. Then a couple weeks later they said ID since our babies share a placenta. there is a chance 2 placentas fuse together but its pretty rare they told us. so yes, you will find out usually while pregnant what type of twins you are having. ours are mono/di

  • they can be ID in separate sacs but then those 2 are in one big sac.If its this tyepe of twin mono/di then the membrane between them is super thin almost unoticable for a while sometimes. Or they can also be in one sac and be ID but if there are 2 placentas they are fraternal.

    Congrats!

Just to clarify, even if they are in separate sacs (di/di), she would still have a 1 in 9 chance of them being identical.

  • I have identical twin girls, there were two sacs and two placentas.  I was told they were fraternal while I was pregnant.  Only way to 100% tell was to get a DNA test.

I have heard numerous stories similar to mine where they were told fraternal,  but the babies turned out to be identical.

    Hope this helps!

  • I'm still a little confused over the di-di/mo-di, etc stuff, but I can tell you that I went to MFM last week (at 13 wks) so they could tell for sure if there were 2 placentas, and they said there were... so you can expect to get some more info in a month... I don't think the placenta can be see well til at least 12 wks. GL!
