Educational toys for 1 year old?

My family is asking what to get for his Birthday.  Any suggestions or toys that you have for learning?

My son loved those very large lego type blocks.  It teaches them to put stuff together.  They have people and cars that come with them too, for creative play.

any type of sorting toys would be good. target carries toys from the "Parents" magazine line, and they have ages on all their toys. blocks are also good for stacking. these are all skills that are good for 1-year-olds. is that what you meant by "educational" ?

We are getting this for DS for Christmas - try the demo out,  lots of cool features and I know DS will love it!
