Dear GOD in HEAVEN! Please give me your advice!

My 3.5yo DD has been in daycare/preschool part-time since September. Now all of a sudden she doesn't want to go to school - so much so that she threw a hissy fit this morning and cried for over an hour. She even told me last night that she didn't want to go to school today.

I asked her (without leading her) if something was happening at school that was hurting her or of she was upset with another student or a teacher - her answer was "No - I just don't like school."

My question is - What is the best way to deal with this? She refuses to get dressed or get in her carseat - she squirms so she makes it impossible to "force" her.  She obviously needs to be somewhere while my Dh and I are at work.

Thanks!

  • My 3.5 year old ds suddenly doesn't want to go to school either. He'd much rather stay home and play all day. He's fine once we get downstairs but often fusses and whines the whole time he's getting out of bed and getting dressed. Once he's there, he LOVES school and has a blast, he just had rather stay home all day. I'd rather stay home too but life doesn't work that way so I've been trying to just redirect him each morning, put on music and act silly, bring out a book from the closet he doesn't normally see...anything to distract and redirect him from the constant whine.

  • My 4 y/o has been doing the same thing. He whines and cries he doesn't want to go, but when I pick him up everyday he asks me why I didn't let him stay longer. So I know he's having a great time once he's there.

I think i've linked it to the summer schedule. A lot of his friends got pulled out because their parents are teachers, or work in the school. Plus all the teachers are taking vacations so the schedule is just off.

  • Aw, I know how you feel. Just this morning, DD told me she didn't want to stay at school today.

I agree with grja. In our daycare/preschool, summer is a different school day. Teachers are in and out, kids aren't there all the days they usually are during the school year, etc. And DD's favorite teacher went back to college last week, so she's sad about that.

Can you work with her teachers to find out what fun things they are going to do for the day? Maybe ask them to tell her a secret when she gets there so she knows something the other kids don't. Maybe a little extra special attention from them will help her get out the door.

And do you think your growing belly may have something to do with it? I know my DS went through a phase while I was pg about going to school too.

  • You and I are really in sync lately with our bump time!

I don't have any advice for you but I hope she starts to like daycare again. I'm totally picturing your mornings with her and it must drive you nuts! Is it better if Pat takes her? Have you talked to her teacher?

Rowen has not wanted to go to school a few times last year but he didn't make a big deal about it. This year he will be in preschool and that means longer days so I hope he still likes going.

I actually don't take her - Pat does. I am already at work when she goes and Pat is at his wits end. And you know Pat has the patience of Job.  She tells Pat that she wants me to take her. I think that is part of it. Also the Prev Posts have good points; maybe she is feeling that she wants more mommy time because of the coming baby. Also, the Summer school IS different because her favorite teacher is not her teacher in the summer.  I think the next step is talking to her teacher - and doing what the PP suggests - having her tell her a secret or something like that.

  • Will she have a different teacher or class in the Fall? Is there a way you can take her? Make it special mommy and Jordan time?

Rowen is less than thrilled with his days at camp (it's at school) because of the different teacher and class. He starts PreK in two weeks. We'll see how that goes.

There is really no way I can  take her. We pay for 3 half days which start at 11am. I have to be at work at 8am. If I take her that early it will cost double. Also, I work 35 minutes from home so I can't even run out and run back because JUST travel time would have me out of work over an hour!
