Two Under 2

New Here & Just Trying for 2U2 ...

I know that this is premature coming on and introducing myself.  I have a beautiful baby boy who was born at the end of September 2010, DH and I are currently trying for #2 as and we are hoping to conceive before November so that the babies will go to school just one year apart.

I have a terribly vain questions, which I am embarrassed to ask ... did you find that your body spread a lot more during pregnancy #2 and did it take longer to get your figure back?  People always tell me that if you have 2 pregnancies close together then you spread more each time - but the amount I am running around after DS at the moment I feel like it is a constant work out.  What did you find?

Thanks in advance.

Re: New Here & Just Trying for 2U2 ...

  • Yay for Sept 2010 Mamas!

I got bigger a lot earlier during this pregnancy-- I looked like I was about 4 weeks further along than I was, compared to my pregnancy with DS. It seems to be evening out the further along I get, though-- I'm almost the same size as I was at 25 weeks last time. As for getting your body back, I'm not sure.

  • I wouldn't trade my 2u2 for anything in the world. I certainly wouldn't discourage you from moving forward with your TTC plans.

However, I feel like with two back to back pregnancies my body will never ever be the same. I was a little bit over weight when I got pregnant with DS, nothing terrible though. I gained 30lbs. I quickly lost 35lbs quickly while breastfeeding. I gained about 5lbs when I stopped breastfeeding. Then I gained 40lbs while pregnant with DD. I'm breastfeeding, and 3.5 months PP, and have only lost about 20lbs. :( To make things worse my body is just bigger. I'm certain even if I drop pounds my body will never be the same.

  • Thanks StefB - I really just want a healthy baby but for some reason this time around I am nervous about weight gain - last time I was not at all.  However, what you have just told me has cheered me up.  Thank you.  I cannot believe how quickly your pregnancy is flying by - where is the time going?!!
  • oops I managed to do a repeat post!

Thanks for your honesty - 3.5 months is not long anyway.  I am sure that looking at your beautiful, healthy DD makes a body change worth it anyway.  Thanks for reinforcing in me what is really worthwhile concentrating on.

  • I put on 20 pounds for both pregnancy's and I lost the wait fast.  I didn't spread or get any stretch marks from either.  Good luck!

  • My hips are definitely wider than pre-pregnancy, but I think that would have happened whether I had kids 12 months apart or 12 years apart. I still fit in all my prebaby clothes, though.

I didnt have issues losing weight, as I gained a minimal amount of weight with each pregnancy.

The body is different and I still have a little pooch but for the most part its back to normal.

    Welcome and GL!

  • Hi Aimes and fellow Sept 2010 momma! I have no advice, but I do worry about the same things as you. I didn't loose all of the pregnancy wt before getting pregnant this time. It's only for a short amount of time, and you get the gift of having children so any sacrifice is worth it. GL in TTC (soon)

  • I was about 125lbs pre-pregnancy #1 and am 5'4''.  I gained 35lbs, and lost it all plus some by a few months post partum.  No stretch marks, hips weren't wider, I really bounced back - I did exercise a few times a week and watched what I was eating, but overall didn't find it too hard to lose the weight or look like I did pre-pregnancy.

This time, I got bigger a lot faster, but I think it's evened out and I have had a lot of people comment that I look smaller this time.  I am on track to gain 35-40 lbs, so a bit more than last time, but I don't really feel like my hips are wider based on my clothes.  I think some people's bodies react a certain way to pregnancy and it doesn't necessarily have to do with the time between - although I would think the condition of the stomach muscles would definitely have an impact on how your midsection recovers.

2nd this. But I still have a bit of a tummy. I think I still have residual swelling from the c-section, though.

I think it makes a huge difference whether youve lost the weight from the first pregnancy (when you get pg the second time)

Also, make it a point to eat healthfully (which you will already be doing for the baby anyway) and try to stay a@tive if medically possible.

  • Thank you so much ladies, you're a nice bunch over here ;). Congrats to each & everyone of you with your 2 LO's. I really hope to be over here a lot in the not so distant future.
  • I was bigger with pregnancy #2.  I showed earlier.  But I hadn't completely lost the weight from pregnancy #1 and my son was A LOT bigger than my daughter (DD was 5 pounds 1 ounce at 35w4d and DS was 9 pounds 11 ounces at 39w4d).  I didn't "spread" or have any permanent body changes from having 2 close togehter... but my weight gain was greater.

That being said, the weight came off extremely quickly after #2.  Thanks to nursing, weight watchers, and exercise I was back in pre-pregnancy clothes in no time :)

After infertility, two pregnancies, etc. I had gained A LOT of weight.  Since DS was born in November I am down almost 80 pounds.  I am 40 pounds lower than my pre-pregnancy weight with him.  I have about 10 pounds to go to be as thin as I like to be.  But right now I am very healthy, look good in my clothes, and am a healthy weight according to the BMI.

And yes, running around after 2u2 is exhausting and a good workout :).  If you are conscious of your body and make an effort after the baby is born you will be totally fine.

  • I am only a little more than halfway through my 2u2 pg, but I think I have something to add.  I have had the experience of both 2u2 and non-2u2 pg.  I was in my pre-pg clothes a couple months pp after having each of my sons and at a good weight, if redistributed slightly.  This pg I have gained more weight early on (about 10lbs, with my other pgs I didn't really gain any weight at all during the first half), also, I just feel bigger so I would have to say yes to "the spread" you mentioned.  I have started to be a little more mindful about what cravings I am giving in to (which I didn't have to do with my other pgs).  Still, I feel confident that I will have my body back relatively quickly again after #3 (maybe with more stretch marks and not quite the same, but I never expected it to be and I know the LO will be worth it all).  Anyway, that would all be the least of my worries in considering TTC again =)
