Mystery fever?

Warner has a fever of 102.5 and other than being kind of sluggish and not having an appetite, he has no other symptoms. Any ideas on what could be going on? I gave him some ibuprofen and I'm trying to get him to drink some juice...hopefully his temp will come down soon!

Re: Mystery fever?

  • That happened to Jack once, it lasted a whole weekend, and then the fever went away and he was covered in red bumps. Turned out it was roseola.

  • Also sounds like hand, foot and mouth.  DD2 (10 months old) has had a small, but weird diaper rash for the last 4 days and today started with a fever.  I called the on-call pedi to confirm HFMD because a baby had in her class last week.  Symptoms include malaise, fever, loss of appetite, blisters on hands, feet and in mouth, sore throat, etc.  It's a virus, so no treatment.  Pedi says it's very common this time of year.
  • Fifth disease is going around DC's DCP - starts out with a fever and no other symptoms, then comes a rash on the face that looks like they've been slapped, which then spreads to the rest of the body.  It's viral, relatively harmless and once the rash comes, no longer contagious.

Does Warner get ear infections much?  Could be that as well.

  • both roseaola and hand, foot and mouth sounds miserable :( ugh.

his fever was down to 99.2 within 2 hours of taking the ibuprofen, but by the time it was time for his next dose, he was burning up again.  he doesn't appear to have any blisters anywhere (yet), but I'll keep my eye out.

    thanks for the feedback, ladies!

I'm pretty sure it's not his ears, because he has tubes in and at our last doctor appt, they told me they are in place and look good. but I'll keep my eye out for the rash...good god, I've never even heard of fifth disease!!

  • If you throw in vomiting, that would be the same thing we dealt with. If it is the same, it was truly. A 24 hour bug. I hope Warner feels better soon.
  • If it does end up being fifth disease, call your OB to see if she wants you to have blood work done to see if you're immune or if she wants to see you. Fifth disease is no big deal for kids, but it an be an issue for pregnant women in a small number of cases. (Most adults are immune, though.) Hope Warner feels better soon!

DD had roseola too and the doctor said the fever associated with it responds well to medicine and spikes back up when the medicine has run its course. She was totally normal acting besides the fever. I thought the spots were an allergic reaction.... her spots were very visible in the bath tub!

  • DD had a fever last week and no other symptoms (we even asked her, "do your ears/throat/tummy hurt?" and she answered "no"). After a couple of days, I took her to the doctor because I just wasn't comfortable with it.

She had strep throat! It's going around her daycare right now. I cannot believe that she didn't complain of a sore throat. When the doctor shined the light in her mouth, her tonsils were totally swollen and red!

Maybe take a look in Warner's mouth...?

  • DS had hand-food-and-mouth disease but only had a blister on his throat, none on his hands or feet.

    hope Warner is all better!

  • I went ahead and took him to the doctor this morning because his temp got up over 103 during the night. Turns out that his throat was all red and his glands are swollen, so they did a strep test, but it came back negative. The doctor said it's just a sore throat/cold! It's super weird because his nose isn't running at all (yet) and I have asked him about 10 times if his throat or neck hurts and he always says no.

And while he's definitely a little sluggish still, he is in a good mood and talkative (as usual!)...just not much appetite. All he has had to eat today is applesauce and some potato chips (don't judge, I thought they would make him thirstier so he would drink more fluids--it worked!). :-)

Anyway, I'm glad that the doctor didn't think we need to be worried about it being HFMD or anything else out of the ordinary!

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies!!
