Juice???

my aunt bought addy a sippy cup. i had been thinking that she was ready for a sippy cup but didn't know about buying her one because i have no idea if i really want to give her juice or not.  i read somewhere about 4oz is the most a baby should have in one day. i ok'd my mom and aunt to give addy 1oz of juice mixed with 2oz of water.  i figured it's not bad cause she's only over there once a week.  but i'm not sure if i'm going to incorporate it into her daily diet.  any thoughts on juice?

Re: Juice???

  • Your baby doesn't need juice!  There is no nutritional value, just a lot of sugar. Most docs don't even rec'd water before 6 months (and some even later than that!)  Use water or breastmilk/formula in the sippy cup if you want your LO to learn to use it.

  • I have to agree with PP expect on the water. Just put breast milk/formula in the sippy cup if you want to let her practice. Just don't force her she is still so young.
  • No need for juice just yet.  You can let her play with it if you put some formula/breast milk in it.  I did that with DS the other day just to see what he'd do.  He had a bit left over in his bottle, so I stuck it in a sippy cup.  He loved grabbing it and knew to put it to his mouth but got very frustrated.

  • Absolutely no need for juice at this age! Personally I wouldn't suggest it before a year. Most peds don't even recommend water until after 6 months.

  • We give K water in her sippy cup all the time. She mostly chews on the top and talks to the cup and gets water all over her shirt. No need to waste bm or formula because chances are she is going to spill it everywhere.

  • Thanks ladies! Addy does 6oz bottles so I gave her a 5 oz bottle and then gave her 1oz in the sippy cup. The swap was pretty easy peasy since she was already in the mood for eating/sucking. I wasn't too keen on the juice idea period. I just don't know why it didn't occur to me to put milk in the cup. Dur.

This. NO WAY to juice as anything but a treat for older kids.

  • Only give your baby juice if you don't mind a mouth full of rotten teeth. Not a good idea.
  • My daughter still doesn't get juice. The only time she got it was around 10 months or so when we were letting her figure out how to use the sippy cup. It was mixed like a 1/4 juice/water ratio and then once she figured out the sippy cup we went back to juice.
