What do you give as potty rewards?

After a long time trying to get him interested in the potty, DS finally started peeing on the potty today. He seems to be very motivated by candy rewards, so we've been giving him a Hershey kiss each time he goes. I know it's motivating him because he'll say that he needs to pee and then get a Hershey kiss. But, I don't think that many Hershey kisses a day is good for his teeth. Although we brush them every night, he doesn't let us brush as good as I would like.

What does everyone else use as potty rewards?

  • Two stickers for a pee and a mini candy bar for a poop.  So far no candy has been given.

  • we started with stickers for pee and elmo for poop. She mastered poop but then went back to having trouble with pee. Now for pee she gets one Annie's Fruit Snack, but these days I usually just use them to bribe her when we need to leave the house and i want her to go before then.  I couldn't imagine giving her chocolate or candy as a reward.

  • I've been giving him gummy bears.  It's what we had/have in the house.  We're really not potty training him.  We just encourage him to use the potty in the morning and evening when he doesn't have a diaper on.  We've had success with peeing, but he's only pooped once, and it freaked him out :(

  • stickers and/or M&Ms
  • we gave 2 m&ms for pee, 3 for poop.  we also did a sticker chart, and after so many stickers, he got a small prize, like a new book or a matchbox car.  we started off with needing only 5 stickers for the prize (for motivation), then upped the amount to 8.  good luck!

  • We gave 1 m&m for pee and 1 sticker on the chart, double if he pooped, too. When the small bag I bought ran out, we switched to blueberries or raspberries because DS loves them and they're better for him.

  • I used to give M&Ms and then I passed to stickers. Now that he is trained we don't give anything, unless he asks.

  • We let DD help decide on the reward.  I think it motivated her a little.  We got a tube of the mini M n' M's and she got a couple when ever she peed or pooped on the potty.  Then we did a sticker chart.  We went to the dollar section at Target and she picked out her "chart"  It was actually a dry erase board but it worked.  She picked out a Phinas and Pherb one because she is obsessed with them.  Then she picked out a bunch of stickers.  She got one sticker when she went pee and two stickers if she pooped.  I got a bunch of little dollar books and things and when she got 10 stickers she got to pick something out.  She has done a great job and I would say she is mostly potty trained.  She is in underwear all day at home and has only had 2 accidents in the past 2 weeks.  She asks to use the potty.  We have not ventured into the outside world without a pull up so that's our next mission.  These rewards seem to work well for us.  She has pretty much phased them out at this point and just uses the potty when she needs to.  I don't bring up the rewards unless she asks.  She has not asked for a sticker and maybe 2-3 times for M n' M's in the last 3 weeks.
  • DD loves getting toilet paper, so that's her reward. Easy, huh?

  • 1 M&M for pee, 2 for poop. We gave them every time when we first trained. Now we only give them if she reminds us (she forgets about them a lot, surprisingly).

  • We've never done any rewards - except for high fives and clapping, etc. It just seemed like something else to worry about.

  • We did matchbox cars and those little folded up square washcloths. You can get them at Target for a dollar my son was amazed with them ! You just put them in the bath and they turn into a washcloth, my son loved getting those as prizes.

  • 1 m&m for pee and 2 for poop.  When he went a whole day with no accidents, he got a star on the calendar.  When he got 5 stars in a row, he got a vacuum cleaner.  Yes, that was what he wanted desperately.  That was his motivation for getting trained.
  • She got 1 mini chocolate chip or mini M&M for a pee and 2 for a poop.
