What age for a train table & any recs?

Since DS and DD both have birthdays during the holidays, we like to buy a few gifts that are a little advanced for them.  That way we can put some of the older toys away and pull them out later in the year.  This got me thinking about a train table for DS.  He'll be 1 this Christmas, but we can put it away until 18mos or so.  What do you think, did your 1-2yr boy (or girl) enjoy a train table or would that still be too young?  Also, if you have one can you recommend it?  TIA!

  • My 2 year old DS loves his trains!  We do not have a train table but will be getting one soon!  He really started getting into them around 18-20 months

  • we have a bunch of train tables to line a wall of the playroom- the first one we got when the twins were about6 months old but DD#1 was 2.  By the time they were 12 months old they likes to pull up on it and stand playing with toys.  We had balls on it for them to roll, some bigger cars to push back and forth to eachother, trains, all sorts of stuff.  In the playroom now, one has megablocks, one has farm animals and a couple fisher price barns, one has trains, and one has a doll house.  I like them because they are easy to clean up toys off the floor without me being anal about placement and more than one kiddo can play without them being on top of eachother.  I don't think 1 is too young for the table, but DS didn't REALLY get into trains until about 19 months.  He has a geotrax set and the standard wooden one with magnets and we switch them out every few months.

None of the tables seem better than another- we've got the M&D, a Battat, an IKEA, and I don't even know what the others are.  I'd pay more attention to how you'd like to store things.  At this age I refer the drawers, but one has bins in the bottom and I think that will be awesome when they're older, but right now they're a pain because my littlest one loves to just pull them out and dump them.  The kids like the M&D one and they like to open the drawer and sit in it while they play.
