Okay... trial run on my first tutorial! Apologies on the outset if something doesn't make sense. Be sure to ask and I'll clarify!
Some background:
I decided to pick up some flats to supplement our stash because they are UBER cheap, but I had been really scared about the convenience factor. Certainly they wash and dry easily in comparison to my pockets and fitteds, but they seem daunting. After some trial and error, I have decided that I LOVE flats. While I won't always grab them, I do about 90% of the time if we're home.
Plus it's fun to experiment with fit with these suckers. You can get something pretty customized... which is what led me to this!
Introducing the Origami Hip Twist
(I think this is original, BUT I have not tried to verify this... in any case, I love the fit and wanted to share)
Steps 1-7 correspond with the origami fold.
1) Start with a flat completely unfolded.
2) Fold into half.
3) Fold into half again (you end up with a quarter-folded flat).
4) One of the four corners will have edges with no folds. Grab the topmost layer of that corner and pull to the opposite side.
5) Flip the entire diaper over.
6) Fold the squared off-side into the middle to create a soaker piece (usually 2 folds)
7) Lay under baby to where the longest side is flush with hips.
8) On one side, about 45 degrees from baby's hip joint, grab the edge of the triangle and fold up to the hip.
9) Pinch the fabric with one hand and twist with the other.
10) Pull center of diaper (soaker) into place.
11) Fold the tail of the twisted side back.
12) Repeat with the other side of the diaper (I use my forearm to hold the unpinned side while doing this).
13) Snappi or pin (please excuse my fussy little model...).
Better shots after he got done being annoyed at me for taking forever to shoot pictures while diaper changing... What a little trooper!

Re: Flat Diaper Fold: Origami Hip Twist (pip obese UPDATED - they appear now)
So, I didn't like the fit of the origami fold on DS because it was too blousy around his butt cheeks, and let's face it... that's the LAST place we want extra bousiness.
I used the jelly roll fold with my pf's when DS was EBF for the same reason and it worked pretty well, but I hated how it left a little ridge on his booty. I didn't think it'd be comfy to sit/lay on that...
That led me to trying the twist at the hip, which can be adjusted in both placement and tension to fit a baby's booty.
I was also paranoid of the snappi cutting into DS if I didn't get enough fabric in between the teeth and his skin. Folding the flaps back helps to prevent this issue (as does the extra fabric around the twist.
A few pointers, though... You have to experiment as to where to put the snappi teeth on the hips in relation to the fold - otherwise the tails will twist and the snappi will come out of place.
I also find myself sort of straightening the fold down the soaker piece (right after step 8) for neatness. Plus that gives a tighter fit, but I don't think it's necessary.

:::celebrating AggieBeth's seriously hard work, holding a half diapered baby and shooting photos!!!:::
I have a crap ton of flats, I'll have to try this!! Great tutorial!
That is fantastic.
And AMAZING that you managed to get that on your LO and photograph it at the same time. I have a hard time getting an AIO on DS these days.
Thanks! It was fun
DS is a good little trooper.
Let me know if I can clarify anything or if you figure out any good folds!
