MMR and fever?

Has anyone's child had a fever after the MMR vaccine? My older two did fine, but my youngest has a high fever and is generally miserable feeling. I took her to the dr where her ears, nose, and throat looked good. He dismissed the idea that the fever was caused by the vaccine, though, because she had the shot 9 days ago. I thought a rxn could show 7-12 days after the shot? Any advice on this--I want her to feel better soon!

Re: MMR and fever?

  • This happened to my DS.  He had a high fever (about 103) with no other symptoms beginning about a week after he had the MMR and it lasted about a week.  I took him to the doctor to be checked out and she found nothing wrong other than the fever, so she attributed it to the vaccine.  I gave him tylenol whenever he seemed extra miserable (and an hour before a meal if he had skipped the previous meal completely).  He was ill for about a week, and I was annoyed, but a fever is waay better than having measles, mumps or rubella, so I tried to view it as a side effect.

  • DS had his yesterday and he doesn't have a fever but the nurse said it could happen as well as rash within 10 to 15 days.

  • Symptoms can appear up to 21 days after the shots is what I have been told. It was on the pamphlet for the MMR that the pedi gaves us. Matthew had a fever and broke out in red spots within a few days of his shots. I gave him baby ibuprofen.

  • We haven't gotten the MMR yet but with all other vaccines our pediatrician instructs us to give Tylenol every 6 hours for 3 days no matter what.  He does this proactively since there is a possible link to autism and fevers with vaccines.
  • Our pediatrician warned us about a fever after the vaccine. She said 7-10 days after, you will notice a high fever of 102 or more. It might last 2 days. She said Infants Advil should decrease the fever, but if it does not respond to medication, call the doctor.

Huh? How would tylenol stop autism?

I'm sorry, your screen name has "nurse" in it.  I'm just wondering if you're really a nurse, and if so...do you actually think that tylenol will keep your child from getting Autism?

  • Our pedi told us it was normal for them to get a fever and/or a small rash from the vaccine 1- 1 1/2 weeks after you get it. My son never did, but it sounds normal to me.

  • The tylenol keeps the fever away, therefor they are not fevering after the vaccine.  One of the "possible" links to autism in regards to vaccines is the combination of fevers at the time of administration and for the days following.  BTW, I'm not a pediatric nurse, I was merely trying to share my personal experience.

Show us in the AAP where that is said or mentioned please. Or better yet show us statistics to back up this idiotic correlation please.

Mmm well I have read all the research, I've worked in the field for several years and I am not trying to be mean.  I just don't like when people say things like this, because it spreads misinformation and fear.  The "link" if there ever was one, had very little to do with fevers and more to do with the chemical exposure to mercury.  But no link has ever been established.  Tylenol in fact is very bad for developing kidneys and livers.  Yes give it to ward off a fever, but giving it every six hours (Max dose) over three days is not something most pedis would recommend unless it was absolutely needed.  I asked if you were a nurse, because I was truly interested in a medical professional having that view.  And your screen name does say "Nurse" what else would I assume?
