Does Mar need a picture ID to fly?

She's flying with her own ticket for the first time and it occurred to me last night (at 2 a.m. of course) that she might need a picture ID since the ticket is in her name.  Or will just her birth certificate do?

Re: Does Mar need a picture ID to fly?

  • No. Kids under a certain age do not have to have picture ID. You could carry a copy of her birth certificate, but I've haven't been asked for it since we started buying her own seat. They only wanted it before (on southwest) to prove she was still under 2.

I've traveled with B twice on his own ticket.  If we're asked for ID for him, his birth certificate has satisfied that requirement - but he's not even a year yet.

  • William has had his own ticket a couple of times, and I have never even been asked for any ID for him. I always keep a birth certificate with me just in case, but I'm sure that would be sufficient.

  • I'd bring her birth certificate just in case.  Abbie has flown many times on her own ticket and they've never asked for ID, but I always have that.  The gate security will look at her ticket and ask her what her name is and how old she is and that's it.

  • Well, i guess I should travel with a BC just in case!  Since we bought his own ticket (on SW), I just assumed I wouldn't need proof of his age, but never thought of an "ID" for security.  We were never asked for anything (luckily!) - they just looked at his boarding pass, and that was it.

  • Even when SS was 14yo and 5'11" and basically man-sized, he did not need ID. We usually have his passport with us just in case, but typically the security agents just ask him questions about who he is travelling with and where he is going. (even though he looked grown up, as soon as he opened his mouth it was always obvious how young he was). But until he started looking so grown up, say elementary and middle school, we never even took his bc.

  • I know you have already flown, but for anyone else....children under 18 do NOT require an ID (for domestic travel only, of course).  This is on the TSA website.

Birth certificates are not required as "ID".  If they are needed it is because the airline requires it to prove a lap child is under the age of 2.
