How much is reasonable at a garage sale for name brand clothing that is in really good condition? Does the brand name make it worth more at a garage sale or is a tshirt from Target worth the same amount as a tshirt from miniBoden? WDYT?
Everything I've found online says to price things at 1/4-1/3 their original price, but I seriously doubt I could sell a $30 dress from the Gap for $7.50-$10 at a garage sale. I don't want to sell myself short, though, either. I've never had a garage sale, nor have I ever shopped at one, so I am clueless.
Re: how to price name brand items for garage sale?
I'd say the breakdown on the stuff I have to get rid of is 10% Boden, 20% Target or Old Navy, 70% Gap. So, mostly Gap stuff. I realize I may be able to get more if I ebay it, but I do not have the time to deal with that. I've thought about trying to take it to Once Upon a Child, but I have heard crappy things about them, so I don't really know what to do. I will have to check out the Boden FB page. Sounds interesting.
Good for you for doing a garage sale. I cannot hadle the stress of it all...so my stuff just sits in totes.
Two of my friends have one every year together, and they've always invited me to join them, but I've never had time. But I am making time this year. In the past, I've always just given the kids' clothes away, but considering how much there is, it is hard to do that with the thought that I could make at least a little money back. So, we'll see how this goes...but like I mentioned, I am totally clueless on how to price this stuff.
Like snowflake said, I think $8 for a gap dress that has been worn once or twice is an awesome deal, but I'm not sure the normal garage sale crowd will think that.
I don't think you will get 8, maybe 3-5. Most people who shop garage sales for clothes also usually shop sales at stores like the gap too and know that you can often find deals in that range. When I have a sale, I usually mark my name brand pieces around 5 and they usually don't sell, and everything marked $1 does.

If you are not up for Ebay or CL I would try a reseller and then yard sale what is left. This is what I do and sell a box of clothes for $x dollars (usually $25) and advertise like this;
Box of Spring Girls 2T - Gap, Old Navy, Target, CP, Gymboree
Box of Boys Fall 4T - x, x, x, x
People seem to love that they are getting a full wardrobe with some high price items thrown in. I take out only the very high end, adorable outfits and price them sep.
I think alot also has to do with your area and who actually shops garage sales.
Around me any clothing at a yard/garage sale no matter the brand, you'd be lucky to get a $1 apiece for it.
So, the best bet is to consign clothes (in my area) esp. if they are brand name.
I've shopped around some yard sales (mainly looking for toys, not clothes) and I've come across a nice gymboree outfit, skirt, top and matching barrettes (once!) and it was marked $2, I offered $1 and the lady took it (it was almost noon, stopping point for sales around here) and she said others have offered her .25 or .50 for it and she was holding out trying to get at least $1.
We are just cheap around these parts.
Unfortunately, I agree with this. I do a lot of clearance rack shopping, and when I do, I look for dresses in the $5-10 range, and shirts and shorts/skirts in the $3-4 range. At a garage sale, I'd assume that things were worn often enough that they should be even cheaper. Plus, I don't usually shop Gap or Boden, so I'd have no idea how much they're originally worth.
