I'm so terrible, I know, but it's taken 2 weeks for me to post this. Having a newborn leaves very little time for computer usage! I hope everyone is doing well, and I hope to at least scan the boards today to see who else has delivered.
Kate was born on 10/3, following a scheduled induction. I will post a full birth story soon. I was 4cm when I was induced, and the doctor seemed confindent it would be smooth and quick. Not so much He broke my water and waited for contractions. I was having them, but they weren't painful or very regular. So, he started the Pitocin. They had to keep upping the Pitocin until finally I was in excrutiating pain. They checked me, and I was 7cm. The doctor and nurses seemed pretty sure I'd have a few more hours, so I opted for the epidural (not at all what I had originally wanted). But the pitocin made my contractions right on top of one another, and I literally didn't have time to catch my breath between them. By the time the epi was in, I was 9.5cm. I was still so happy I got it, since I pushed for 3 hours. I watched the whole thing with a mirror. I was so physically exhausted at the end, and her head just wouldn't make it under my pubic bone. It was so frustrating to see her head almost crown, and then slip back with each contraction. My doctor kept suggesting c-section, but each time I begged him to let me keep pushing. I had a wonderful nurse who was so supportive. Finally she said to me "Look, your doctor wants to do a c-section. I know you can get this baby out. He hasn't suggested using the vacuum, but I would try that before a c-section."
So, the next time my doc came in, I mentioned the vacuum. (Why I had to mention it, I don't know). I can't explain just how exhausted I was at this point. The doctor said we'd give the vacuum a try. With 2 big pushes, and help from the vacuum, Katherine Marie was born. She was born at 8:52pm (started induction at 7am), and weighed 8lbs, 3oz. She was a big girl, and I delivered 2 weeks early!!
Life since has been wonderful. She's amazing to watch, and I just can't get over how quickly I felt like a mother. I know that may sound funny, but it really was instant.
Breastfeeding has gone wonderfully well, I couldn't ask for a better experiecnce. She's sleeping well (for a 2 week old!).
I will try to post a picture... but the format has changed since I've been on last! Good luck to everyone who is delivering soon!
Re: Katherine Marie is here!!!
Congratulations! This is a wonderful birth storty and I am SO glad you stood up for yourself and avoided an obviously unnecessary c/s. I can't believe your doc didn't even offer any alternative ways to get her out. That just makes me wonder about the sheer number of unwarranted c/s out there.
Anyway, enjoy your cutie, she is adorable!
