Two Under 2

New Job Dilemma

Hi ladies,

I don't post often, but I really need some input on this one.  I'm in a less-than-ideal situation at my current job and had started applying for a new job before I found out I'm expecting again.  I got called in for an interview but didn't say anything, since I wasn't legally obligated to.  On Monday I was offered the position.  The pay is slightly less to start but there is a much higher earning potential in the long run, it is much closer to my home, and it gets me away from my current boss who I am having major issues with.

Here's the downside....I decided I needed to be completely honest about my pregnancy because I needed to know that they weren't going to fire me on the spot when they found out.  I was told it's not a problem, but I will not qualify for FMLA, so according to the company policy I will only be able to take 6 weeks for maternity leave.

DS will be 14mos when LO#2 comes.  I have a supportive family who will definitely help out, but is sacrificing 6 weeks of bonding with my babies worth the long-term benefits???  I'm asking this group because you will understand the difficulties of having to return with 2u2 better than anyone else.

TIA!

Re: New Job Dilemma

  • My current job only offers 6 weeks post partum leave but I was able to save up vacation days with DS and take an additional 6 weeks, I'll probably do the same with LO#2. DS was in the NICU for a about a month so I didn't think it was a good idea to send him to daycare so young. This time around I think that we'll need the time to get into a schedual.

I'm not too sure what I would do in your situation. If the job is much better and will offer alot of opportunities down the line, its so tempting. Would it be possible to work part time or telecommute after your 6 weeks are up? If not maybe your SO can take a couple weeks off that way baby can have some bonding time with him?

  • Wow that is a tuff situation.  6 weeks is not very long and you probably won't have a lot of vacation saved in that short amount of time.  So if I was in your situation if you have vacation plus FMLA that you could take with your current job then I would stay with them because thats a good amount of extra time with your LO, potentially months.?  You can always look for another job at a later time, but you can't get your time with your LO back?  But, whatever you decide will work out and good luck!!

  • Mine are 14 months apart, and I was nowhere near ready to go back after 6 weeks, either time. I had c/s with both, and my dr signed off to get me 10 paid weeks, which was awesome, and I took two unpaid weeks too. Going back at 12 weeks was rough with my 2u2, so much so that I ended up going down to three days a week shortly after returning to work. I do understand where you're coming from, as I just turned down an offer at a company I've been trying to get into for years, but right now my family's best interest trumps my happiness. It sucks, but it's how it is right now.
