Second guessing a decision I've made.

We have a short vacation planned for mid september.  DS1 starts pre-k on the 7th of September, so he will end up missing 3 days of school about a week in.  When I originally scheduled it I was thinking that it really wasn't a big deal but now I am wishing that I hadn't scheduled it at this time. He adjusts pretty well to things and this is his 2nd year of preschool. It's a 5x weekly program so he will miss a Fri, Mon and Tues.  No big deal right? If I cancel or reschedule we will lose money and everyone is really excited about it.

  • For Pre-K, not a big deal. He'll adjust fine.
  • Preschool? I wouldn't even give it a second thought, have a great time!

  • I wouldn't worry about it at this age, go have fun.
  • last year we planned a Florida trip and it ended up being the first week of PreK for DS.  It was no big deal.  His teacher even told us to go and have fun.
  • We are doing the same thing, the boys start September 6th, and we are leaving for Disney the following week and they will miss 2 days.  I planned this trip very carefully (didn't want them to miss the first week, wanted to go before DS #2 turns 3 on the 17th and while it's still warm enough to swim, etc).  I do hate that they are missing school, not that I think they will struggle with it, but just I'm SO looking forward to getting into a routine and I kinda wish we were going before school actually starts....but this is for DS #2's birthday, so I keep reminding myself I did it for a reason and we are going to have so much fun :)

  • Are there a lot of kids repeating the program?  I know for my DD who is repeating her PreK class this year vs moving onto Kindy with most of her friends, missing in the 1st week or 2 of school would be really hard for her.  I know it sounds crazy, but even at age 4 and 5, the kids really start to form their friends and play groups that early on.  I know it can chagne and if your child is one who does great with change and new kids and all that then amybe he would be fine.  Knowing my DD, it would be really hard on her to miss 3 days at the beginning before she really gets to know all the other kids and feels out who her friends are going to be.

  • Not a big deal at all.  Esp. since it is his second year of preschool.  If it was his first year I'd say no just because the first couple of weeks they're all learning routine & such, but you guys should go & not think twice about this!!

  • Thanks for all the input.  I talked to DH and we are going to keep our plans, which I am excited about!

Jlw- it is all new kids, they don't have a 3's program.  It did take him about a good month to really get the hang of his first preschool experience, but it was only 2x weekly and he hadn't had any experience with classes without me before.  He has grown SO much since then and adjusts very well in most situations and makes friends pretty easily so I am hoping this won't be a problem for him.  I mean, kid's will be out sick and stuff in the beginning of the school year, it happens, right? But I hear you about groups being established during this time...
