Fellow teachers: Back to work for me. U?

Boo, hoo... ::dreary music::

Lol!  I am starting back for 3 days of reading/LA training tomorrow.  Next week is 5 days of ELD... yay... Then the kiddos are back Aug 15th.

I'm actually excited for this year's class.  They seem like a fun group.  I teach 8th grade, self-contained at a small K-8 school.  My close coworkers know about me being PG, so that will be good if I don't feel good at the training.  It's only for 7-8th this week.  I still don't want the rest of my coworkers or students to know for about another month or so.

When do you start back?  When do the kids show up?

Re: Fellow teachers: Back to work for me. U?

  • Our kids start Sept. 1st and we go back a couple days before that.  Although... I'll be at school a lot getting my room and new curriculum ready (switching from K to 1).

  • I am just finishing up my summer enrichment classes this week.  We don't go back until a few days before Labor Day.  No one knows about me yet...so it will be fun to see how quickly it spreads. :)  Good luck with the start of your school year! :)

  • We don't go back until after Labor Day, but I have some professional development that I am taking today and tomorrow.

     Good luck with your classes!

  • I go back Sept. 1st, kids come back after Labor Day.  I have been off with DD since she was born last March, so it is going to be VERY hard to go back...

It wasn't by choice- it was due to low enrollment at kindergarten.  But, I'm keeping my same class from last year, so that makes it MUCH better!  I had a great group of kids and wonderful, supportive parents.  So, I think it'll be ok.

  • NYC teacher here...our kiddos start on Sept. 8...we have prof dev days on the 6th and 7th.  Spent 7 years in kindergarten...movin on up to 1st this year.  I teach in a CTT room-Collaborative Team Teaching...60% gen ed, 40% spec ed with a gen ed teacher (me) and a special ed teacher (who is actually a REALLY good friend of mine) collaborating.  My co teacher knows and has known since we got our BFP...the frequent vomiting for the last 2 weeks of school kinda gave it away...I too am curious how quickly it spreads...people in my school loveeee to gossip!

I hope everyone enjoys what it left of their summers...how do they go soooo fast??

  • Hey I teach 4th grade. We go back on September 1st and the kids start September 6th. Only family and 1 friend knows i'm pregnant at the moment so it will be fun to go back and have the news shared with everyone. Last week i was at a week long summer workshop and had a bunch of people from work there including my boss. It was pretty funny sitting there knowing my BIG secret and them not knowing anything! I can't wait to tell my people really soon! My husband and I will share the news a week from Saturday at our house warming party....i just can't wait!!!

  • I'm a little late to this post....

Teachers start tomorrow  :-(    And students start Tuesday the 9th of August.  So I guess my summer is officially over.

I teach first grade this year and then normally would keep them and teach them second next year.  I say normally because I haven't decided if I'm going back or not, such a hard decision!!

No one at work knows, and as much as I love some of the teachers, news/gossip spreads fast so the first person I'll tell will be my boss.

When is a normal time to tell??  All I know so far is I will tell before my bump is obvious.

  • I was picked to do some extra meetings next week and then I have off until the 28th of August for some inservice days and then the kids come back after Labor day.   I will be in there alot on my "days off" because at the end of the last year I had to move my classroom that I've had for 4 years to another room.  I'm looking forward to the beginning of the school year but really nervous too.  I hope my students are good. I also teach 8th grade but i'm in an inner city school so it just depends.  some years my students are amazing with a few knuckleheads and some years I'm surrounded by knuckleheads with a few shinning stars.

I keep having terrible nightmares about walking in the halls.  The hallway is always where the fights start (hardly happens and doesn't last long) but I'm terrified I'll get stuck there with my pregnant belly.   My friend told me she would be my body guard for the year :)

Has anyone told their principals yet?  I'm kind of nervous to do so.

  • First workday is August 17th... kids start on the 25th...

I am trying to psych myself up for the new year!

  • We have "PD" on the 15th and 16th, then kids start the 17th (since we have no money to pay for legitimate PD, it's usually just our principal trying to lead a discussion that turns into a fight between a couple of teachers).

I am ridiculously excited for this year.  I loop 7th and 8th grade, and our school is really small so I already know all the 7th graders coming in.  The kids who will be my 8th graders this year were the best group of kids I ever had as 7th graders.

Since there's only 8 full-time teachers at my school, about half of them know.  The others, I'm just not that close with, and it's not a big deal when they find out.  I'm more worried about parents finding out because they are very overbearing at our school.  When one found out I was ttc she complained to me that she didn't want to have to go through a maternity leave for her child.  STFU. :P

Wow sounds like we work at opposite schools.  I'm just shocked by that comment.

  • In Jersey we don't go back till the 6th. We have PD on the 7th and the kids come the 8th. I am starting a new position this year so it's exciting all around. I am just a little nervous about telling my new principal that I've only met once that I am going to be leaving in Feb for maternity leave. I'll be teaching 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade resource room.

  • I've had training since last Thursday after spending the previous week in Baltimore for training.  I will be in training until the 12th then work at school the 15th and 16th and kids come back the 17th. I am technically in administration (we call it "leadership team") so this year is a LOT different for me.  It's a new position for me so I am more nervous than I normally am before the school year starts.

I plan on telling my coworkers after our ultrasound/sonogram, which will be at 18-20 weeks so anywhere from 5.5-8.5 ish weeks.  We'll see though, as this bloat is sticking around and I'm thinking might be baby bump.  :O)

Congrats on your new position! That must be very exciting!

How many of you are going back to finish out the school year?  I had originally planned on not returning, but now I'm not so sure.  I lovelovelove my students, and I want to see my 8th graders graduate. Plus, my principal offered me the opportunity to bring the baby in once a week as a "Practical Life" opportunity. I just can't decide now...

  •

I am definitely going back to finish out the school year.  The main reason is that I just can't afford to stay out past the allotted time.  The second is that I also teach 8th grade and I would miss seeing them graduate.  I'm lucky enough that my mom offered to watch the LO when I go back to work since I will only be working for a month and a half until summer break and I'm not too sure it would be worth it to put LO in day care for only that short amount of time.

  • I go back on the 15th, and kids come back on the 22nd.  We have a week of Prof Dev.  I have already told my boss because I was asked to train the teachers for state testing, and the training takes place a week after I am due.  So, I figured it was best to tell her that I would not be able to do this task.  I haven't told the rest of the staff, but will be letting them know very soon.  We are all pretty close.  I will be returning the first week of April.  I wish I could stay home, but I love my job and we need the money.

  • I go back 8/11 and 8/12 for reading training. The in-service day 8/15, then the students show up on the 16th.

Thanks so much.  I am very nervous/excited.

I will go back at the end of April and have 23 days to work.  Technically part of my job is implementing summer school but I think I'll bow out of it and I am sure they'll accept that.  FMLA covers my FH to stay home so he might be able to cover us till summer break is over and then we'll decide if I am going back to work or not.  Right now, I don't want to, I KNOW that already but it might not be an option for us money wise.  boooooo
