Lazy Latch & Falling Asleep

I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but LO has a lazy latch (that isn't painful) and often falls asleep at the breast, meaning he never gets enough and cluster feeds often.

He's 8 weeks old and I'm worried we're missing our window for fixing this, plus I'm going back to work in a couple of weeks and will be pumping 2-3 days a week.

Sorry, I don't know much about the lazy latch.  But from past experience, DS would fall asleep while eating, but I was told by my LC to keep him awake no matter what you have to do.  Undress LO (so they aren't warm and comfortable), tickle them (only for a few seconds at a time so they don't get used to it), press on their feet, etc.  I think weight will be a strong indicator about how much he is really getting.  I remember I went into my LC and she weighed DS, then had me feed him right there, and he ate a full ounce in the few minutes I fed him.  So LO may be getting more than you think.  I would talk to either your pedi or an LC about the lazy latch.  There might be other things you can try.  Good luck!

My LO is 6 weeks and he does the same thing, I was noticing when i gave him my milk in a bottle he'd put back 4-5 oz. easily in 10 min and was content for hours..but was concerned he wasn't getting enough nursing,  because he'd "eat" for 40 min to an hr on one side (wasn't interested when i tried switching), but would be hungry again,an hour later... so I called the dr. and they told me that 40-60 is too long and to feed 15 min on each side. since thats when the heartier filling milk comes. and if i tihnk he's still hungry to try giving him a couple more oz. per bottle. and see where it goes.. and to feed him like that every 2-3 hours.. so far since i switched it.. its been better.. maybe try that?

We have bit if a lazy latch too. Are you using the RAM technique (rapid arm movement) to get LO on? I have found that it comes on a little too strong for DS so I let him take his time and smell the milk, maybe a bit of suckling before i use the heel of my hand between his shoulder blades to more gently guide him to the breast. You can then gently us your fingers on the back of the head to "steer" them a little better. It still ends with a quick push to the nipple but eases into it a little more. Might be worth a try?
