hiking while Pg?

anyone know if it's a good/bad idea to go for a day hike while pregnant? I'm mostly concerned about the change in elevation? I'm pretty active (run 4'xs per week) and was invited to do a hike to Camp Muir on Mt Ranier. It sounds like fun, but I dont' want to overdo it. Especially since I'm still in the 1st trimester.

Thanks in advance for thoughts/advice!

Re: hiking while Pg?

  • What's the elevation gain?  I hike almost every weekend, but haven't been higher than Snoqualmie Pass.  I get light headed a bit easier so be sure to drink lots of water, otherwise you should be fine.

  • Ditto above. If you are worried just run it by your doctor really quick.

  • My doctor said any elevation in WA state would be fine - women live at elevations of 13 and 14,000 feet with no ill affect to mother or child.  I've been hiking alot this summer and found that I have to take breaks frequently to keep my pulse and temperature down, especially in the sun.  Also getting swollen ankles so study boots are a must.  If your headed to Muir be respectful of the sun exposure - yes, lots of water, also a hat with wide brim, dark sunglasses, and cover your skin (clothing + sunscreen).  Reflection on the snow doubles magnifies the sun so even on an overcast day your skin and eyes can get fried.  Altitude and exposure can make you loose appetite and not feel hungy or thirsty until it's too late.
