Cloth Diapering

coconut oil, cj's butter - good for treating rashes?

hi ladies, we've been using ca baby rash cream, and while it's okay, i'm suspecting that it's causing build-up on our diapers.  so i'm looking for something else to treat rashes (not just prevent them).

i've read some raves for coconut oil and cj's.  cj's looks very similar to rear schmear, which contains olive oil, lanolin, and beeswax.  however, rear schmear (says so itself) is for preventing rashes, not necessarily treating it.  is cj's actually effective at treating rashes too?  what about coconut oil?

thanks!

  • I find CJ's works better as a preventive, rather than a treatment, for rashes.  If DD is getting rashy I use a thin layer of CA Baby diaper cream or Aveeno (with fleece liners).  FWIW CA Baby diaper cream has never caused buildup on our CDs.

I don't know anything about coconut oil.

  • I have a cream my friend made for me with tons of coconut oil and I LOVE it! We were battling rash after rash and this has helped tons. She says its cloth safe but I haven't used it enough to see if its causing a build up.

  • I like motherlove diaper rash and thrush for treating rashes. It works for us better than CA baby and anything else we have tried. I like CJs for preventative and we haven't tried coconut oil.

I was also going to suggest Motherlove Diaper Rash & Thrush for treatment. CJs is a good barrier but I haven't found it works well for treatment. Coconut oil is worth a try.

  • We use coconut oil and it works great!  I have some EMAB that I use as well, but more often than not I just rub the coconut oil on it and he smells like a pina colada. :)

  • We've been using coconut oil every diaper change for probably a month now.  There is no build up on the diapers.  I really like it.  She has very sensitive skin and it helps keep her rash under control.  It's supposed to be effective in treating a yeast rash and it works well at clearing up and preventing rashes.  You can't get any cheaper either!  CJ's doesn't work for us b/c something in it causes my LO to break out.  It makes me sad.

  • I actually have heard of CJ's staining some diapers and causing buildup and repelling.  I have some samples but don't use them on DD's bum.  I guess it doesn't come off the diapers with certain detergents?

Anyway, I swear by Northern Essence Diaper Rash Salve - sensitive skin version.  Been using it for 3 years and never any staining or repelling issues.  I just got some more in the mail yesterday.

I also like the Motherlove cream which you can get at Whole Foods or a local health food store if you have one nearby.  It's just expensive for a tiny jar though.

And coconut oil will work in a pinch but it's not as good at getting rid of rashes as it is with prevention.

  • I was using CO for a rash that turned out to be yeast.  It didn't do much for that (although it did clear up some of the redness - it just didn't kill the yeast).
