Pregnant after IF

Ectopic?

I had my first beta 2 days ago and it was 286, my beta today was 521. So it didn't quite double. My RE said he was happy with the numbers and could rule out ectopic pregnancy at the 1st ultrasound on 8/15. I asked him why he thought it could be ectopic and he said that he didn't think it was, but I have an increased risk due to stage 4 endometriosis and scarring on my tubes that he saw during a laparascopy. I guess I'm just scared now and don't know how I'm going to wait 2 weeks to find out for sure. Has anyone had any experience with ectopic pregnancies? Were your betas normal?

Re: Ectopic?

  • I'm sorry you have to wait so long to find out, I had an ectopic pregnancy last Fall and my betas were low and all over the place, they'd go up, then down then up again. Is your doctor going to continue to do betas on you while you wait? He should, it would possibly rule it out or at least make you feel better in the meantime.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancy. How far along were you when you found out? He wasn't planning on it, but I may call and see if I can.
  • When I got my BFP, my betas were rising, but not as fast as the average rate.  I think my doubling time was 70% every 48 hours.  They want you to be closer to 100%, but 53% is the minimum.  Due to the slow rising beta's and the fact that mine never sped up at all, my doc was concerned that it was an ectopic pregnancy.  Once my beta was over 1,500, the doc was willing to do an u/s, and we saw a teenie tiny gestational sac in the ute - where it was supposed to be.  That was at 5 weeks and 1 day - so that would have been at about 18 or 19 days past my 3dt.  Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  • Your beta had a good rise.  Don't jump to that yet.

I've had two ectopics and there is no way to know until they see a MUCH different result with lower betas cannot find anything in the uterus during an u/s.

    Good luck to you.

  • Thanks for your replies! I'm just going to have to be patient and wait for the ultrasound in 2 weeks to make sure the it's in the right place.

@stuck - that makes me feel a lot better. I'm glad the little one was where it was supposed to be. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

@mrsrumpf - I'm sorry to hear about the two ectopics. It's crazy how fast I got attached. I didn't realize it until the doctor said the word ectopic and it made me panic.
  • I think it's a bit ridiculous that your Dr. would have brought that up, but anyways. . .I'll share my story.

I had an ectopic in December and my betas rose steadily and within normal range, but were not superstars. The big "hint" something was wrong was when I bled the equivalent of a full period around 5w but my betas kept slowly going up. Now - bleeding isn't always bad, but combined with my "ok" betas, I have to admit, it wasn't a huge shock at 6w3d at my u/s when there was nothing in my uterus.

At that point we checked my beta again and while it had gone up, it had stopped rising with any significance. Had another u/s and combined with pain I had when the Dr. moved the wand around and pressed on my abdomen, found it in my left tube.

    Best wishes to you!

  • I would try not to worry, it sounds like your doctor is probably just checking to be on the safe side. When I had spotting, and my second beta numbers were a lot higher than expected, my doctor thought that I might have an ectopic pregnancy as well, but the 2nd u/s revealed baby right where baby was supposed to be. I think doctors just sometimes don't realize that there are some things they should just kind of.... not say out loud until they can confirm what they're thinking. It just makes you worry for nothing. Good luck at your next u/s.
  • You guys have been great at making me feel better.

@ sweetky - thanks for sharing your story. I don't think the doctor meant to say it was a big risk and he kept reassuring me that he didn't think it was, but it worried me anyway when he had said it.

@ ya never know - I'm glad to hear that your pregnancy wasn't ectopic. Hopefully you didn't have to wait too long to find out that it was fine.

I found out at 6 weeks. At just before 5 weeks, they saw a gestational sac, but no baby in it, so I had to go back at 6 weeks, and there was baby... he/she was just too small to see the first time. :)
