Re: silver nitrate on belly button

  • I think this is what DD had done--was it because the belly button still had some "living" part (for lack of a better explanation)?

The belly button stopped oozing right away, it took a few baths for all that gray stuff to get completely cleaned out. I should say after she had it done we waited a day or two before a bath. Be careful, as it will get on clothes and leave a mark.

  • At the two week check up the pedi used silver nitrate on our LO belly button because there was a disgusting green discharge coming out.  At the time they warned me that the silver nitrate would stain his clothes that day but then it would dry up.  It actually took several days (and destroyed onesies) to dry up.  Then about a week later he got what appeared to be a crescent shaped bruise below and to the side of his belly button.  It ended up being what I would call a silver nitrate scab.  The skin peeled off and his belly button and tummy now look perfect!  Such a weird situation but luckily it's all over with no lasting effects.

  • DD has had it put on twice now. The first time it was to help the cord stump dry up. The second time it was a few days later b/c the scab fell off and left a yellow bump type thing there. It dried up pretty quickly and formed another scab. Now, that scab has fallen off and there is still a little bump, but it's getting smaller. We're going to the pedi tomorrow, so I'm not sure what he'll do.

  • I believe it worked right away for DS. But he wasn't oozing, really, he just had blood rubbing off on his clothing/diaper/stomach so we knew it was still bleeding some. After that, he just had a little scab (I guess you'd call it) in his belly button for maybe a week or less, then that came out. but Ped said not to bathe him til the rest came out just in case.
