1st Trimester

Anyone use Phenergan for nausea?

My ob just prescribed this for my horrible nausea. I haven't vomited yet, but my nausea has been extremely bad for the past week. Phenergan is apparently a suppository that I'm supposed to take rectally (yay) and she recommended this over Zofran. I'm told it can make you really sleepy, but no other real side effects. Anyone else take this for their nausea? Did it help? TIA!

Re: Anyone use Phenergan for nausea?

  • I have taken this for general nausea dozens of times. Mostly after surgery.  It works really well and yes, it does make you sleepy. So don't plan on going anywhere after you "insert" it. Hope you feel better soon!

  • So I assume it won't do me any good if I can't take it before I go to work? I was hoping some of it would stay in my system if I only take it at night so that I could get some relief during the day and actually function.

And ... just HOW do you take a suppository? As easy as inserting it and that's it?

  • My Doc prescribes zofran and phenergan for nausea....I like zofran better, it doesn't make me as groggy.

When you insert, try to aim up along the rectal wall, to make sure it's absorbed well.  You can use latex or nitrile gloves if the thought of doing it grosses ya out. TMI, sorry!  Hope they help!

  • I've only taken Phenergan a handful of times, and it's knocked me out every time. My sister had luck with vitamin B12 with her kids- I never really needed anything with the first one.

  • I took a half a pill when my Zofran wasn't cutting it and it knocked me out. I had to take a nap (I'm exhausted anyway) and even after 2 hours I didn't want to wake up (but I HAD to because my DD woke up from her nap).

  • I took phenergan during my first trimester. And yes it made me incredibly sleepy but I took mine orally, which of course I like better lol.

It affects everyone differently.  Give it a shot and see how you do. Worse case, could you take a sick day?

And as far as the pill goes, you just bend...and shove. I wouldn't go past your knuckle, if I were you. :)

  • I have been on Phenergan for HG and it backfired for me and made me sicker ( but i have a lot of reactions to meds like that)  but i LOVE Zofran.  I don't get sleepy or anything with it, and I can take it before, during, or after I eat and it doesn't result badly.  Phenergan also gave me backlash migraines ( as other medications do as well lol)  I have the Zofran that melts away in your mouth, it took a little to get over the reaction of the taste lol, but it makes me feel 10thousand times better. :-)

  • I had phenergan and it said to take with water....I guess there must be a non-suppository form of it that I had.  Anywho, it made me sicker and I got zofran after that.  Zofran is wonderful.  I hope you get some relief...

  • Phenergan has a sedative in it; that's why it makes people very sleepy. Most antiemetics have a suppository option since, PO (by mouth) would most likely get thrown back up.
