Need suggestions: Birthday gift for a 2 year old???

Sorry, I'm popping in because I figured many of you have babies that are 2 or close to turning 2.  My niece's second birthday is this weekend.  I need suggestions on what to get her.  I want to get her something that she won't be over and done with too quickly. 

I'm kind of tired of clothes, but I can go that direction if you think that'd be best.  I'm not a fan of getting toys because they seem to get over those so quickly.

Any suggestions?  What would you specifically ask for your child?

Does she have an easel?  My DD got one from her aunt and she LOVES it.  It has a chalkboard, white board, is magnetic, and you can attach paper to it for painting/drawing with markers.

She also loves her Cozy Coupe, Little People (she has loved those for a year so it might not have the longevity you are looking for), her water table, and her wooden trains (she has Melissa and Doug and Thomas).  My daughter also adores any and all books.  My favorite books are by Sandra Boynton.

Books are our favorite gifts!  For a 2 year old a great gift might also be something like a cool placemat or a matching cup and bowl set or whatever - DS is eating all kinds of food w/ fork and spoon with us at dinner time and he seems to feel special having his own cool utensils, etc.

You could also consider puzzles, or dress up clothes, or something crafty (like coloring books, playdoh, or stickers)
