Lactation Consultants

Can anyone recommend their lactation consultant for a home visit?  I am not even pretending that my first BF experience with DD has me at all prepared for BF twins.  I want to have the numbers ready for when they arrive.  Also, what were the approximate costs.  Thanks!

Re: Lactation Consultants

  • I saw 2 women and both were very good and both were recommended by our pedi.

The first was Jane Balkam at Babies N Business.  I was on antibiotics from day 6-17 so was pumping and dumping during that time and DD was getting formula. We went to Jane after the first few days of getting back to breast where we were struggling and it was very painful.  She was very helpful in that she showed me how to have DD latch on (quickly) by herself-DD and I just couldn't get the open wide and put baby to breast down.  This trick I think made it possible for me to BF her-the pain went away almost instantly once she was latched on right.  We went to her in Bethesda:

Second was Colleen Prorok who owns Lactation on Location.  She came to me the day after I called her, which was on my way home from a Le Leche League meeting balling my eyes out b/c the leader told me that DD was malnourished (she was 4 or 5 weeks old at this time). When Colleen came she was basically like why did you call me as DD was in the 90th% for weight and was a good eater. Lack of self-confidence I can now say.  When my freestyle pump wasn't working for me after I returned to work, I rented a Symphony from Colleen:

I would recommend both women in a heartbeat.

I want to say both were around 150/200 but I can't remember exactly.  Good luck.

  • I second Jane and Colleen.  Both are fantastic.  Good luck, Jenn
  • I saw many LCs and my favorite was a midwife/LC and former LLL leader. https://www.birthblessings.com/bf.html

Also, I cannot say enough good things about LLL. I noticed on the NoVa LLL page there is a MOM group. I know you are MD, but it may be a good resource for getting recommendations:

  • Hi!  We contacted the Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington based on the advice of some of the MoM's in our Montgomery County Parents of Multiples group (If you're not already a member you should be!).  We had a great experience with Margaret Wills. She came out to our house and spent close to 3 hours there but only charged us for half that (the total was $220).  It was well worth it!

    Good luck!
