I can't understand why toddlers all love Elmo. How is he different from the other Sesame Street characters? DD adores her 'Melmo,' which is fine with me. I just don't get it.

another Melmo here, too. mine's always been a COO-KIE fan first and foremost and that's cuz of a chatter toy she got for her 1st bday- before she'd ever even seen Sesame Street (man she loves that toy).
i think they like Elmo's high (annoying if you ask me) voice and his bright red coloring.
LO loves Elmo. I turn Sesame Street on in the mornings and he doesn't pay any attention to it... until the Elmo's World music starts. He's glued to the TV until Elmo's World goes off and then he goes about his business!
Because he is such a naughty little monster. I love Elmo. I love his silly face because when he does it, he looks like he is having a stroke. And I love how sesame street always puts humor for adults in there. Like the "Meryl Sheep". They make me LMAO every day!
OMG! I know, right! We were a strict "no TV" house until about a week ago. I've written many posts about our no TV use. Well, somewhere along the way DS learned who "Melmo" was and so I let him watch it ONE day. Just the Elmo part. He now INSISTS on his "Melmo" ALL DAY LONG. I had to buy him an Elmo book and Elmo guitar. I've let him watch several episodes of Elmo now. I hate that about myself and I think that now that I'm back to work I'm going to try to cut out the TV again full-time until 2.

LOL. I'm going to have to watch more closely.

I'm convinced it's the voice. And you're right...all of the other seasame street characters just don't compare. She has not interest in them.... ONLY ELMO!
And what's scary is that when DD watches it, she is totally enthralled. I really don't want to see her with ANY tv show like that. We are having to limit the amount of elmo that she watches. She has been asking for it so much. I hate to tell her no, but I really don't want her to become a tv junkie. And I do realize that they talk about educational things most of the time, but still. I'm not going to have her watch it every day.
Freaking elmo. Why does he have to be such a successful tv marketing character?! LOL.

I read an article once saying that Elmo and Abby Cadabby are geared towards toddlers. I am not sure what it is they do, but it works. I think "Melmo" was DS's 3rd or 4th word. The Sesame Place commercial comes on and the kid freaks out. When he sees me pull my laptop out, he instantly starts yelling "ELMO!" b/c we sometimes watch it online. He hands me the remote and yells "ELMO!". It's an obsession. An obsession that we totally feed into, too. We are taking him to Sesame Place for his borthday and then throwing an Elmo themed b-day party for him. I also thought Elmo was the cutest of all the kids' characters, so I am not complaining.

I absolutely can't wait to take DD to Sesame Place. I figure by next summer she'll be ready. I have the best memories of childhood trips there. I'm hoping reality doesn't spoil my memories.
