Milk slowing down, spit up and sleep question

Ok so a couple weeks ago t seemed as if my milk has been drying up. They haven't felt as "full" and he doesn't seem to be getting as much during feedings. I work part time and am able to pump once at work but I still miss 3 feedings about 3 days a week and now it feels like it catching up to me. I'll try and feed him from me and he"ll fight it like he's having a hard time getting milk so I'll give him a bottle and he'll down 5 ozs. I know he's growing and he may just want more substantal food but it's hard since I know breast milk is so good for him.

He also seems like he spits up a lot and it seems to be more with breast milk.

Oh and he's also not STTN. Needless to say I'm tired.

Sorry, I know this is a lot to ask, just wondering if anyone else going through similar things?

Re: Milk slowing down, spit up and sleep question

  • I am! I don't know why my supply is slowing down. It was going strong all along and then last Friday it just cut in half! I work FT and pump 3x a day. If you figure this one out, please let me know!

As for the STTN, is your LO teething? Mine had a few rough nights and I think he wasn't eating as much because his mouth hurts. We also finally started solids just one feeding a day (didn't decrease the BF, just added cereal after a feeding) and that helped. He went right back to STTN.

  • Yeah, his teething started like a month ago. It seems better now but he's still drooling and eating everything =)

  • I have been having the same problem.I also work part time and felt like i couldn't keep up. I have been drinking Mother Milk tea from traditional medicinal (i think that is what it is called?!) It has worked great for me. I have been feeding on demand too. She is going through a growth spurt and letting her eat as often as she wants has helped trigger my body to produce more milk. I started my DD on cereal with breastmilk. She is super active and my pedi said she could definitely use the extra calories. I also try and pump whenever i know that my little one is going to be asleep for a few hours. So feed her a little cereal with breastmilk then breastfeed her from one side and pump the other side. I try to do this for her afternoon nap and when she goes to bed for the night. As far as STTN I am still working on that. She started waking up 3 or 4 times a night a few weeks ago and she just seemed so hungry and i felt like i couldn't fill her up with just breast milk. That was when we started homemade rice cereal. It helped, we are now back to twice a night. It is still a little frustrating because from 8 - 14 weeks she was only waking up once during the night. But i will take 2 times over 4 times any night.
  • Your breasts regulate over time so they don't always feels "full". Around this age the teething can start and they get distracted more easily so it could all be related to why he is fussing a bit more at the breast. My DD is doing the same thing and its obnoxious but I am a SAHM so I know she's getting the same.

Your missing those pumpings can definitely be catching up with you though, can you add in a pump while you're at work? Could you even maybe do a hand expression for 10 minutes in the bathroom (as a normal type bathroom trip) to signal to your body you need to make milk at that time? It would suck to let it go down the drain but at least it will help keep your supply up.

Do you have a lactation consultant you can talk to? One of the ones that I see says that a BF baby will almost always drink from a bottle after being BF - even if they just got enough from mama. So him taking that 5oz bottle might not mean you're empty.
