1st Trimester

No internal u/s at 8-10 wk appt?

We have new insurance so I had to get a new ob/gyn.  With my first baby I had my first appt at 6 weeks and they did an internal u/s to confirm the heartbeat.  The new ob/gyn I called said they don't see you until you are 8-10 weeks along and don't do an internal u/s, only bloodwork.  Is this normal?  It seems awfully long to have to wait until my second appointment, at which time I'll be 12-14 weeks, for them to check the hb.  TIA!

  • I had an internal ultrasound and 6wks 4 days and then I had a regular ultrasound on my belly at my 9 week appointment and confirmed the heartbeat.  I know a lot of people don't usually get one as early as 6-7 weeks, but then when they have gone in between 8-10 weeks most of friends have gotten an ultrasound at that point.

  • I am getting my first one done next Friday, a bit over 7 weeks. But I know most people get their first one between 7-10.  Maybe it is because it is a new doctor? I am not sure if this would work, but you could try requesting that they do one?

  • I had an internal at 8 weeks but they didn't need any blood and strangely didn't even ask for a urine sample.  I thought that was odd because usually they like to monitor your urine when pregnant.
  • Completely normal.

  • Normal.  With DS my first appt was at 9 weeks and my only US was at 20 weeks.

Unless it is medically necessary or you have had previous complications, all these extra US are unnecessary IMO.

  • A lot of insurance companies only pay for one ultrasound, the anatomy scan (barring medical complications or genetic screening). Completely normal.
  • Normal. I see the nurse practitioner at 8 weeks for bloodwork and to answer any questions and the OB at 12 weeks.  No u/s then either (unless I opt for the NT scan) but we will listen to the heartbeat via doppler.

  • I had an internal u/s at 8 weeks a few days ago at my first appointment, other people I know didn't go til 10 or 12 weeks, so t depends on the dr. They also took blood and urine samples for testing. We go back in 2 weeks for the results and financial discussions on what our insurance covers, etc.

  • Normal, that's how my OB works. Hopefully we'll get to hear the heartbeat at our next appt (10.5 weeks). We'll have our first (and probably only) u/s at 18-19w.

  • I never had an internal. I had a regular U/S at 9 weeks.
