Pre-School and Daycare

Anyone doing 5 day pre-k in prep for full day k?

DH and I are going back and forth whether or not we should send DD to pre-k 5 1/2 days this year since she'll be in full day kindergarten. Anyone not do this and have trouble adjusting to a full schedule in kindergarten?

Re: Anyone doing 5 day pre-k in prep for full day k?

  • DD#1 starts K in September. It's full day. Last year, she was in 5 half days with extended days on Thursday and Friday. She got out at 11:20am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 2:35pm on Thursday and Friday.

The transition for her will still be tough since she'll be in 5 full days vs. 2 like last year......

DD#2 is in Pre-K4 this year and will do the same schedule that I mentioned above. She goes to K next September.

    GL in your decision!

  • My daughter is starting preK this fall and will be going 5 1/2 days because that's all that's offered around here. I have no idea where we'll be living next year when she starts K (DH is in his last year of a PhD program, so wherever he gets his next job) so we don't know if she'll be in 1/2 or full day K, but I figure either she'll have 2 years of half days before full days or a year to get used to the idea of school in half days before moving to full days (this is her first year of any school at all). I figure they'll adjust to whatever they're given!

  • DD's bday is right on the cut-off here so she will be the youngest in her class when starting K.  B/C of this I wanted her to have as much time as possible in pre-K. I tried to get in 5-day but couldn't get in so right now she is in 4-day and we are on the waiting list for all 5.

  • My son goes to Montessori which is full time. This will be his 3rd year of what I consider pk since he is still in the same room and they also have K mixed in as well.  They do montessori in the morning and naps/free play afternoon.  I think any child will adjust to what they are asked to do in K.  I think the more important piece is that the child is in some sort of structured learning environment prior to entering K, this way they can more easily adjust to classroom expectations.  Just my observations as a teacher.
  • Last year, DS1 went to prek-3 and it was for two days/week from 11:50am-3pm.  This year, because his b-day is after Sept. 1st, he'll go to prek-4 three days/wk at the same time.  Next year, he'll start Kindergarden and that's all day.

I know he's ready for it, but the extra year in prek will really get him prepared cause it's an extra day of going to school.  Also, I'm not forcing him to take naps anymore, as he's turning 5 in Sept..  I can already run through my head what the routine will be for Kindergarden and it wont be so bad.  DS2 will be going to prek-4 at the same time too!

  • DS1 will go to pre-k five mornings a week but that is all his school offers for four year olds. However, there's a strong possibility he will do a year of full time junior kindergarten before he starts full day kindergarten.

  • My oldest son was in a 5 day 1/2 day program when he was 3 and 4 yo and went into Kinder last year.  By the time he started Kinder going to school was old hat for him.

My 4yo was only in the speech/communications class last year and it was 2 mornings a week, 2 hours each time.  This year he is in the morning PreK program 5 days a week and will go to speech/communications two days in the afternoon.
