Re: Ramadan/Fasting

  • Is your OB Muslim or do you know any Muslim MD's? I would call a doc to get advice for this situation.

  • We don't celebrate ramadan, however if it is extremely important to you and your husband. I would get up before dawn, eat something hearty and drink a TON of water. I would still try to drink water during the day, but fast like normal.

  • I heard you can "make up the time". (this is from my muslim friend whose wife if pregnant). for everyday that you eat during the fasting time you make it up once the baby is here.

  • I would think it wouldn't be a good idea to fast while pregnant, especially if you're having some complications already. It's really important that you drink water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Good luck to you.
  • I read this a while back and thought it was interesting.  https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/11/ramadan-fast-a-challenge_n_679077.html

I personally would take the exemption now...and maybe next year if you are breastfeeding.  You have plenty of time to make it up.

  • I'm not Muslim but I have several friends who are and I have studied Islam extensively. Allah created your body and your baby and knows that it is unsafe for you to fast at this time. You are able to make up for it when you are physically able.
  • Hi  Ummi2be I am also 9 wks preggy but I am so bloated and nauseus and according to Islam if you are unwell or you are putting your life at risk, you musnt fast. For that reason, sadly, I wont be fasting either. :(

This exactly.  I teach at a school where the majority of students are Muslim and I know that being pregnant is an exception.  Your job right now is to do all that you can for the baby.  You HAVE to drink a lot of water while pregnant and it would not be good to fast and not be able to drink water during the day.  Especially since the days are so long and hot.

    Best wishes!

  • Like everyone else says.  I am pretty sure that you are excused from fasting while pregnant.  Please talk to your religious leader about it.

  • I also agree with PP that you do not need to fast.  I have many female Muslim friends and all of them have been excused.  Like Yellowtulips said, I'd speak to your religious leader to get more information.
