Well, anyways over the past week she has had a few accidents. Twice in the carseat (ugh!) and one night she took her pull up off and wet the bed. This is completely unlike her because she will always tell me if she need to go when we are in the car and we will either go home if we are close or find somewhere to stop and go. But both times she didn't say anything and then all of a sudden told me " Mommy I think I had an accident". I have read that UTIs in children can cause them to have accidents even when they are PTed because they get confused about the sensations they are feeling down there, so I think that might be what's going on. Anyone have any insight or experience with this? I think I will be calling the pedi tomorrow.
Re: Anyone have experience with UTIs in toddlers?
Chelsea had a UTI this past spring. She had a couple of accidents prior to it, maybe a week or so before she complained of pain while peeing. She had been fully PT for almost a year by this point. So, one morning she went to go pee when she woke up, and all of a sudden she SCREAMED. I went running in and she was crying, saying "It hurts! It hurts!!!" I didn't want to take any chances so I took her right to the pedi. The pedi looked and claimed that DD had a small cut around the opening of her vagina, and that the urine must be burning from that. I however did not trust that b/c I couldn't see anything, so I requested a urine test. And it came back with blood in it. The pedi thought that the blood in the urine was from the cut, and gave me an antibiotic. But she said she would send it off to the lab to be sure. The lab confirmed the UTI and our pedi said it was extremely rare for toddlers to get them. She told us that it is standard procedure for any child under 4 to be referred for renal ultrasound and a procedure called VCUG. These tests are to look for a congenital kidney defect that causes the urine to back up into the kidneys. Luckily, Chelsea did not have this issue, and is just one of those rare kids that happened to get a UTI.
Now, not to alarm you...but I would call your pedi tomorrow. If your DD were to have this issue, it can cause kidney scarring and other issues. If you have any other questions about it, feel free to ask me.
as a kid I actually had that defect called VUR. I was already PT and my mom said I was telling her it hurt to go. I ended up needing surgery to correct it but since I was concerned about passing it on to dd, I asked out pedi about it and it is something can often be treated with meds now.
