I just got off the phone with my mom who was babysitting my 5 month old nephew. He puked while I was on the phone with her. Her response was "He must not have liked the bacon grease I gave him." Apparently she was letting him suck on a piece of bacon. I'm a FTM, so I'm not sure, but is 5 months old not too young for him to be sucking on bacon?
J/W as I'm sure she'll be babysitting our little on eventually and this kind of stuff worries me.
Re: Bacon for a 5 month old?
as far as I know, much too young. you have to introduce solids slowly and one food at a time. people usually start with easy bland items like rice cereal, banana, avocado, sweet potato etc.
if she babysits for you, I would give her a list of solids that he is allowed to have and be very clear that she is not to give him anything not on the list.
My DH thinks I'm crazy but I have very firm beliefs on what is ok to start feeding and when and have made it extremely clear to him and the grandparents that they will be EXCLUSIVELY BF until 6 months...no rice cereal in bottles.
My DH and I argue on the rice cereal thing all the time, and I show him the childhood obesity statistics and his response is...you know as well as I do lifestyle determines obesity so if mom runs 30 miles a week and dad plays sports kids aren't going to get fat...however, he understands how important BF is to me, so infront of the GPs he is in full support of my rules.
my DD is going to be 20 months old and she still hasn't had bacon. we aren't big bacon eaters and if we did make it i don't think i would let her eat much, it is so salty and greasy--not good for their digestive systems.
i didn't do pureed baby food or wheat cereal until 6 months, that is insane to give a 5 month old.
DS is 2+ and hasn't had bacon.

There is actually research now says there is no reason to feed your kid bland food. If you think about it, it is a very American thing. Babies in India don't start eating tasteless food and if you are breastfeeding the baby is getting exposed to all the exciting food you eat, so their palate actually starts off skewed towards mom's tastes.
Anyway, while I agree that sucking on bacon is gross for a baby or an adult my first food was chicken liver (I stole it at a party) and I turned out fine (and am not picky at all ha ha)
