Hospital Question?

I was wondering what you ladies took to the hospital in the way of clothes for after the birth?  I won't know if I will be having a C-section or vaginal birth until we are there that day so I am not sure what to bring and what is best for afterwards.

Thanks!

Re: Hospital Question?

  • I've had two sections.  One was emergency and one planned.  I wore yoga pants and nursing tanks during the day and big t-shirts/sleeping shirts at night.

Bring granny panties that come up high that can accommodate the biggest pad that you have ever imagine.  The mesh panties that they give you are fantastic...ask for extras to take home.  hth-

  • I had a c section both times and while I know many people swear by the hospital gowns I couldn't stand being in it after a couple days!!  I just felt more human changing into something new!  I wore a nursing tank and yoga pants my last day in the hospital and also wore similar clothes home.  I personally was not a fan of the mesh underwear (also seem to be in the minority on this one!) so I wore the big granny panties!

  • Yoga pants, shirt easy to nurse in, and MESH PANTIES!!!!
  • I just had the maternity clothes I had been wearing in antepartum which consisted of yoga pants/shorts and tank tops.  I got out of that hospital gown as soon as a I could.  At night I slept in one of my own black nighties.
  • I just googled mesh panties and read a tutorial on a blog.  Holy crap!!!  At least now I know, I guess...

I got out of the icky gown ASAP and into my own clothes. The first day, I wore a new nursing nightgown that I'd bought (that really looked more like an empire waisted sundress) and after that it was yoga pants and nursing tanks.  Even though I didn't BF more than a couple times.  They were comfy for hanging out in.

  • I had a few long and very comfy night shirts and a robe as well as some yoga pants and tanks. I had a c-section and was all about comfort, I could not stand anything tight or near my incesion. And ditto the granny pantys...I bought mine just one size larger just in case.

  • I was definitely still in maternity clothes the first two weeks as it took a while for everything to shrink back down. Ditto yoga type pants, nursing tanks and other comfy tops.

  • I was super sweaty for our whole hospital stay. It was partly the plastic mattress and partly the postpartum sweats. But even in February, I couldn't bear to wear anything that wasn't loose and cottony. I was also happy to have a headband to pull my hair off my face. Oh, and because of the fluids I'd been given, I was even puffier than before giving birth - another reason I liked the hospital gown and later some huge yoga pants and a tank.

  • With my singleton I had a vaginal birth and pretty much just stayed in the gowns for the couple of days that I was in the hospital. I wore nursing tanks and the mesh panties underneath and then had my husband's dark robe & some black slippers for walking the halls. With my c-section I brought a bunch of nursing tanks, a comfy, stretchy pair of pj bottoms plus a pair of nursing pjs from Motherhood Maternity. Oh, and fluffy slippers. I wore the mesh panties while in the hospital and cotton granny panties in a size or two up once I got home. I lived in my yoga/lounge pants and maternity jeans for the first few weeks as well as my slippers. My calves and feet were so swollen that I couldn't fit into anything else. I normally wear a women's size 9-9.5 shoe and was wearing men's 11-12 slippers when out and about. Pick up a pair of flip flops or slippers in a couple of sizes up just in case you end up with a c-section since the swelling will be there for 2-3 weeks post partum.

  • Be sure to pack flip flops that you can wear home. If you have a c/s, they pump you full of fluid and your feet will be very swollen. I went to the hospital in sneakers and even had them on when I walked into the operating room, but they wouldn't fit on at all when I left. I had to wear DH's sneakers on the way out b/c I didn't realize this was going to be a problem until they came with the wheelchair to discharge me.
  • I had my c/s at about noon that day and stayed in the hospital gown that day.  The next morning I showered and put on maternity yoga pants, t shirt, and a wrap maternity sweater.  I basically wore those type of items every day.

Ha! This! I thought my feet were super swollen before and I even had my own flip flops, but I couldn't get them on! I had to wear my husbands huge crocs as they were the only shoes that would fit. And I had to walk to the other side of the hospital 3-4 times a day to see my babies in the NICU in them. It was hilarious. I looked like a clown but could care less!

  • i was pretty much the same as everyone else- my boys were born around 1 pm, and for the rest of the day i was in bed and in a hospital gown. the following morning i got up, showered, and put on maternity yoga pants and a nursing tank, which is what i wore for the next week or so.  i had flip flops for while i was in the hospital, and slip-on flats for going home.  you will want something loose and comfortable regardless of whether you have a c-section or vaginal delivery, and your belly will still be about the size of a 7 month pregnant belly for a little, so maternity/stretchy clothes are a good idea!

  • I brought a bunch of clothes, but didn't wear any of them and walked out wearing the same maternity clothes I wore in! I stayed in the hosp gown while I was there (C section) and used their lovely mesh underwear, as it worked better then the ones I brought :)

  • I spent weeks searching for the "perfect" hospital nightgowns/clothes.  I didn't even open my suitcase for 3 days once we were there.  I had a severe 3rd degree tear from my vaginal birth and couldn't stand up long enough to shower for several days.  So, I lived in the gowns they provided.  I was glad I had a robe, though, for trips down to the NICU.  And I had comfy, padded flip flop type slippers that I was so grateful for.
