2nd Trimester

threw out my back, ?

I threw out my back some how, maybe sleeping. It was very stiff this morning like a pulled muscle but has gotten much worse as the day has gone by to the point where moving hurts and standing straight isn't easy. I figure I'll call my OB tomorrow to double check safe options for healing the pulled muscles but thought I'd look to you ladies tonight for some hopefully safe ideas to relieve some pain. If you have had this happen while pregnant how did you help your back? Is a heating pad safe? or ice pack ok? I have been avoiding tylenol although I was told by OB it is safe to take during pregnancy. I think I'm going to take some now to help with the inflamation. I guess my main ? is should I use heat pack or ice on it tonight? or just ride it out with some rest? Im supposed to work tomorrow and after working for just a couple of hours today its even worse than before so Im wondering if I should reschedule my appointments for tomorrow til its better.

thanks if you can offer any help in back pain relief :)

Re: threw out my back, ?

  • Heating pads are fine as long as you do 15 min on, 15 min off. The baby doesn't have any way to regulate its body temperature and so you don't want to accidentally overheat your back to the point of raising your temperature. I think ice would probably not help, but the same rule applies. Tylenol is definitely safe to take too. Hope that helps! (It's what my baby book written by a doctor says.)

  • Definitely try the Tylenol.  A warm bath, heating pad etc all fine to do.  I have had to see a Chiropractor for an occasion when I threw my back out very badly in 1st tri.  Keep moving too.  It helps to heal.  Wear supportive shoes and be aware of how you lift anything.

  • I did the same thing a few weeks ago and it was awful!  Even harder because I have to pick up my 18 month old a lot.

I was told to use ice on it and just rest it as much as possible.  For me, it was better in a few days.

Sorry.  I disagree with the "keep moving too".  The only thing that helped me was resting and not moving it.  When I kept moving, it made it worse.

  • I started my pregnancy with a server back injury.  I was already in PT and they told me to rotate 15 minutes heat followed by 15 ice multiple times a day with lots of rest.  I also had a muscle relaxer that if needed i was told to take you can also take the tyn that would help a little.  Hope you get better quickly

  • I did this last week and the best thing I found was stretching.  The best one (although not recommended for pregnancy) is laying flat on your back and raising your legs up to your chest.  My nurse told me to do this in moderation.  There is also a yoga stretch called table top where you put your arms on the wall or sink and make your body into a 90 degree angle.

  • I had similar problems pre-pregnancy, and am experiencing them again now during 2nd tri. Moving and walking have not been easy the last couple of days! One thing I have found that has really helped is doing some light yoga core exercises, such as modified plank (on the knees), modified side T-stand (keeping a knee on the floor), etc. Something about strengthening the back and ab muscles helps hold your back in place better. Hope this helps!
  • thanks ladies! I took the tyl and have been using a heating pad for about 10mins at a time, didnt try the ice. Im mainly just propped up on the couch trying to not move too much tonight. moving is so painful! I cant stand straight either so walking is even harder. I think the weight of my belly isn't helping things, a week ago I was measuring 30wks with my twins so the size of my belly and weight of it is getting tough on my back. Im gonna take it easy and hopefully it heals up faster that way. I have a history of throwing my back out and its def worse while preggers!! lol thank again for the tips!! :)
