We had Gabriella on our name list for a while but took it off because of everyone's hatred of the nn Gabi. People on this board, friends, family, you name it. I actually think it's cute and spunky.
Do any of you like it? If you hate it, why?

I don't hate the nn Gabi. As a teacher, I've had a few Gabriella's...one went by Gabi. She was a "cute and spunky" girl, so I agree with you on that. I don't, however, think it would be a nn that would age well...it seems to fit a girl, but don't think of Gabi as a professional sounding name (that's when she could go by her full name).
If you still love the name Gabriella, you can also look at other nn like Ellie or Ella.
I like it!!! I had a boss and her daughter's name was Gabriella and we called he Gabbie for short. Go for it, if you like the name then you should use it.
we had gabriella too but nn ella. i've never liked gabby (or gabi, etc.) probably because a girl i grew up with ruined it for me. and now my aunt has a dog named gabby!

IMO, Gabi is pronounced differently than Gabby. Maybe it's because I am fairly fluent in Spanish. And because I have a niece (who is Peruvian) named Gabriela, nn Gabi. And Gabi is pronounced Gah-bee. Which is lovely, imo.
I detest Gabby. It doesn't sound nice and isn't a nice thing to call someone (the implication being that they never stop talking).
However, keep in mind that if you use Gabi, pronounced Gah-bee, you will sometimes need to correct people. (There are those who insist on calling my niece Gabby. It drives me bonkers.)
I like Gabriella, but I don't like the nickname Gabi.
To me, gabby sounds like an adjective, as in one who likes to "gab" or talk incesssantly. I think that's why people associate it with being gossipy or catty. It sounds like a derogatory way to describe someone to me, "she is so gabby."
Gabriella was going to be my daughters name BUT we got rid of it for that exact reason...i hate gabby!
My SIL named my niece Gabrielle, and she hated Gabby so she never called her that. Now my niece is a preteen, and guess what nn she chose to go by? Gaby.
I know a girl named Gabrielle. The family calls her Gabrielle MOST of the time, but sometimes she's Gabi. I wouldn't say they planned on using a nn for her- it just comes out sometimes. There are other nn possibilities for Gabrielle- Bree, Elle/Ella, etc.

Personally, I don't like the NN at all (although I like the full name). Part of it might be an association I had with an unpleasant girl in middle school, but I don't think I cared for it before then either. Just didn't feel classy or elegant to me... a little cheesy maybe?
Re: Does ANYONE like the nn Gabi?
This. We called my late aunt Gabriella, Ella

I like the nickname. I think it's cute! I would not use that spelling though.
It does sound a bit young/childish, but that is why she has full name Gabriella to use as she gets older.

Gabi is a horrid nickname. On top of being a generally negative adjective used to describe a talkative or gossipy person, it just sounds awful.
Fortunately, Gabriella is a lovely name in full, and also allows for much prettier nicknames, like Brie and Ella.

I love it if it goes with your last name.
But I'm biased. My sister is Gabriella and everyone calls her Gabi, which is the short version of it.I'm Eastern-European, though...
