  • I don't have any advice since I'm new... but I'm very glad you posted this!

  • by solution-do you mean what do we recommend?  Prefolds with covers with some fitteds.  Anything that contains runny poo, is tiny enough for NB, and isn't too expensive since the time period is so short.

Favs: prefolds and covers (I used DiaperRite prefolds and thirsties duos covers)

Newborns go through so many diapers in a day that this was both more economical and easier. Also, they don't wiggle around so much so they're not too tricky to get on. I just trifolded into a cover and slapped it on (no snappis). They were also DHs favorite (and I had a little bit of everything.)

Now, for my 14 month old, I'm about over PFs and covers just because she wiggles around so much that they can be tricky to get on before she's bolted across the room. And she's figured out how to take off her aplix dipes.  I'm a big fan of pockets with snaps right now!

Least favs: Kissaluvs Size 0. She peed right through these in no time, and it seemed time consuming to have to snap on a diaper and then velco on a cover or put a wool cover on.

  • We sposies til DD was 2 weeks and I really didn't research enough to have a good NB stash. We found out the pockets we'd stocked up on that are supposed to fit 7-35lbs were way too big on our 7lb/7oz baby until she was about a month old. I ended up doing a last minute order from Cottonbabies.com for prefolds & covers that worked out great while she was really little.

I really like the prefolds we have. I got a deal on an Econobum prefold & cover set & those are so-so; great for the price but DD is outgrowing the prefold already. Thirsties Duo covers are our favorite since they have double leg gussets that contain nb poo really well. It was all reasonably priced too- we spent $30 total on Cottonbabies to get 14 prefolds & 2 covers, about $12 on Spots' Corner to get 4 used covers (Fuzzibunz), and our Thirsties covers were free on Amazon but are normally $13. If I had no budget I'd do fitteds and Thirsties cover but prefolds were fine for us.

  • About how many covers are a good stash for the NB phase? And I'm guessing around 24-36 prefolds would be ok?

  • I loved GMD prefolds (bikini twist fold) and Thirsties XS covers during the newborn stage, even though I thought I'd hate using the prefolds!  I had a really large newborn stash, with prefolds, fitteds, and AIOs, but the prefolds were my favourites.  They never leaked!

I thought I would love using fitted diapers, but they were just okay.  I did really like MamaMade fitteds though.  The AIOs I used (Lil' Joeys and BG newborns) tended to leak the most.

  • Rumparooz are our absolute smallest pockets...and not the Joeys. I never bought those. I would still sat they fit at about 8lbs...other than that I'd do covers and fitteds for a nb because I think personally that the prefolds looked so bulky on DD even just a couple weeks ago. Many go that route though. I just had to get used to that bulk.
  • oh and the 12 diapers a day for a NB was SOO off. She still uses more than that at 2 months...I BF.
  • I personally prefer AIO b/c they are so easy esp. for novice cd'ers like my husband and mom. I also like them at 2 am when I need to get a dipe on LO fast. I don't like their cost, although I bought almost all of mine used. Now LO grew out of the NB dipes at only 5 wks, dammit! So I'm using my fitteds at night and prefolds during the day. I'm getting ready to sell my stash and buy more OS AIOs. If budget were no option her entire NB stash would have been AIO's.

  • Our prefolds with thirsties covers have been perfect.  Our only problem was we didn't get enough!  One dozen prefolds with two covers is good for about 24 hours.  We've had two nights now where DS was in just a prefold with no cover while we waited on the laundry and prayed he didn't decide to make a huge mess before the thirsties were dry.  More stuff is in the mail now, I just have to hold out until it gets here!

  • I am mostly using fitteds and covers - have not had a leak yet and I've been CDing since birth. I also have a few All in ones and I trifold prefolds inside covers when I run out of fitteds. I do diaper laundry ever 2-3 days and usually wash about 20 each time.
  • What I had for DD:

    12 preemie prefolds

    12 orange edge GMD prefolds

24 various newborn fitteds (GM, B4, Mutt, BG bamboo, Nanipoo, Thirsties, Sbish)

    2 BG newborn AIOs

    2 Lil Joeys AIOs

    4 Thirsties Duos covers

    3 Bummis Super Brite covers

1 Imse Vimse cover preemie (newborn)

    1 xs Sbish wool cover

    1 Kissaluvs small wool soaker

    What I loved:

I really liked the fitteds, especially for the first few weeks - my favorites when DD was itty bitty were the Nanipoos and the BG bamboo.  Once she got a little bigger, the Mutts, Sbish, and GM were my favorites especially the Sbish and GM for overnights.  The Thirsties covers worked ok and I loved the gussets to help with poo containment but I don't like the feel of them and she grew out of them quickly.  Plus the velcro gets unsticky very fast.  I also loved the GMD prefolds and found myself reaching for those during the day after a few weeks instead of the fitteds.  Only issue was that I needed more length to do the bikini twist fold (best for girls), so we moved into the yellows pretty early on (3 weeks and 8 lbs).

If I were to do it again for newborn stage:

6 Nanipoos fitteds (these are discontinued but you can find them used)

6 BG bamboo fitteds (such a great fit for small babies and velcro is great for dad)

6 Mutts for during the day

3 GM newborns and 3 xs Sbish fitted for nights (DD stopped pooping at night pretty early so I did need a more absorbent diaper since she only woke to eat)

12  xs Sbish bamboo terry flats - these are amazing - squishy, stretchy, and trim

24 s Sbish bamboo terry flats

In terms of covers, I don't know.  The Bummis Super Brite are a must since they were the only ones that fit in the beginning and have a cord notch plus gussets.  The Nikky covers are also really nice but I only had them in size small not newborn.

I would also do 2 xs Sbish soakers and 1 Kissaluvs small soaker, plus 4 small Sbish soakers for later.
