Ethan was 5.5. It took just a couple of times out there.
Some kids know even before 4, but I think 5 or 6 is more the norm. Do you feel like your kid is ready? Ethan asked to try last year and we let him...but knew he just wasn't going to get it.
ETA: same thing with the swimming. Is your child in swimming lessons? It takes a few years of good lessons to have them actually swim.
dd is 6 and she's not even close! it's just not something we do that often, unfortunately. she gets plenty of outdoor play time but just not riding a bike. I'm afraid the longer we wait, the harder it's going to be!
DS1 learned last year at 4.5. We took him to the black-top basketball court outside of the local elementary school. He learned on the first try, although it took him a couple of more days to get going on his own without one of us giving him a push off.
My oldest was 5, it took a few tries. My 7 y/o just learned - he had no interest in his bike before this year, so I'm not sure if he would have been ready earlier - after he figure out how to brake the 3rd or 4th try he was good (ie both were riding well by the end of the day). My 5 y/o asked for them off, but the first time he tried he asked to have them back - now he wants them off again so maybe this weekend.
We still need training wheels at almost 6 and 4. It's too hot to ride now so they haven't had much practice since spring. It's been 110+ for the last (almost) 2 months.
5, she tried once & didn't like it. About 6 mo later she went to a friends house, got on her friend's (smaller bike) & was off. I think her bike was to big for her to gain the confidence she needed. After riding her friends she came home & could ride her own-LOL.
Joey was 6 (just a couple of months ago) and we took the training wheels off and off he went. He likely could have done it 6-12 months earlier but I much preferred this way...no tears, no falling, nothing. Just hop on and go.
Cam is learning now. We have a small bike (12") and she rides that one (on the grass) with no training wheels. We haven't graduated to pavement yet. Nor has she done it on the bigger bike (16"). I'm guessing next summer, she will be training wheel free. So she will be almost 6 as well. (She just turned 5 yesterday and has been doing the small one with no training wheels for a couple of months).
My kid was early; he asked to have his training wheels taken off about 2 months after he turned 3. He figured it out that day and has been on two wheels ever since.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
My 5 year old still uses her training wheels but I can tell you that she is not one with great balance. Kids in her class of 5 year olds - about half still have the training wheels on. My FIL has a bike for my DD that a neighbor gave them and this weekend, he had the training wheels higher up so both could not touch at the same time and she did OK but still is a long way from being able to go without the training wheels. I am guessing it will be next summer, when she is 6, that we can safely take them off.
Re: One more: what age did DC learn to ride their bike?
