NT/CVS Necessity?

My OB did not even mention either one of these tests at our last appointment at 10w4d.  Is this something that I should call about and ask about?  I'm not even sure that we WOULD do either test, however I wonder if this might be something I'm not understanding???  DH is 25 and I'm 24, if that matters...

Re: NT/CVS Necessity?

  • The CVS is a very invasive test that I wouldn't think you'd be interested in doing considering your age (at 35 my doc wouldn't consider me a candidate for it - he said for woman over 40 usually), but the NT Scan is an u/s and blood-work, between the weeks 11-13 to determine risks for downs, etc. If you are interested in learning more about the NT Scan, you should definitely call your Doc as there is a cut off where they won't do that test anymore. You are young so your risk factors are low and everyone has to make the personal decision that is best for them, but it might be worth just asking about it if you need more info.

  • We decided against doing any testing for anything because nothing will change our opinion of our child, we will love them no matter what.  Also, we both have excellent family health history.  The other main deciding factor was when our doctor told us that insurance companies don't cover the cost of the testing, and some tests are $2000.  We will just have faith and pray!

  • This is my second baby, and I can tell you that the NT scan which tests for Down Syndrome markers, if nothing else, is a really awesome sonogram. When I heard about this test with my son my immediate reaction was well it doesn't matter either way because I will love my baby no matter what. Then a friend of mine told me to do it because a 12 week sono is pretty cool, and she was right! It's a nice chance to see your baby and 12 weeks is a nice size for a sono.

This is not true.  If your doctor refers you to have the test, it is typically 'covered' minus any deductibles/co-pays.

I don't know, that's what they said.  She isn't referring me to take it, it was totally up to us.  Before we knew about the cost, we had decided we weren't going to be tested.  This particular test that cost $2000 was for the cystic fibrosis carrier testing.

  • My doctor has referred me for an NT scan (our request) and it is covered by our insurance. Problem is- we cannot get the place that does them to call us back and we just have 1.5 more weeks in the window when we can get it done. Argh!

Well, it must vary by insurance.  With DD, my insurance covered this test, no questions asked.  It was a simple blood test they did when they did the rest of my bloodwork at my first appt.  I didn't have it with this one since I had already had it done prior (the results wouldn't change.)

  • My NT scan was covered by my insurance and I didn't get referred for it. DH and I did it purely for the extra ultrasound (and it was much better then my 10 week u/s. It doesn't hurt to ask about it!

  • Our insurance covers only ONE- Either you can get NT at 12 weeks, or anatomy at 20 weeks.  You can get both, but would have to pay OOP for one of them.  I wait for the 20 week to find out sex.  The only other way ours are covered is if I have a specific diagnosis that requires them....  And I pray to God I never do!  ;0)  I think I may get some extra with GD, tho, to check baby size.

  • Typically is the key word. We weren't willing to take the chance that Tricare might or might not pay for $2,000 worth of testing. That being said, we opted out.

  • Thanks ladies.  I did not know that the NT test was a screening to be done before CVS testing is done.

I'm going to call my OB today to see what she has to say... I too am suprised that she hasn't said anything considering my next appointment isn't until 14w1d...
