Bleeding Gums

Recently my gums have been bleeding while brushing my teeth?  It looks like someone punched me in the mouth when I brush!  I've always taken care of my teeth, so I'm just wondering if it's another effect of being pg.  Anyone having the same issue?

 Thank you!

Re: Bleeding Gums

  • It's happening to me, and I hate it.  I used to just use listerine and brush. When it started happening around week 7, I started flossing, using listerine, and brushing.  Unfortunately, it's still happening twice a day everyday.  Don't get it. :(

  • Yes, it's associated with pregnancy.  I haven't experienced it personally, but I remember reading about it in What to Expect When You're Expecting.  Our gums can get really sensitive and will bleed easily.  Go see your dentist because you could develop periodontal problems if you're not caring for your teeth carefully.

  • You are completely fine. My gums bleed really badly, and are very swollen in the back. I can barely chew anything. I had my teeth cleaned 2 weeks ago and the dentist told me to start using Crest ProHealth Gum Protection, and ACT mouthwash. It has really helped. They don't bleed nearly as much, not even every day anymore. The swelling has also gone down some...still sore. It's worth a try. Also, try to brush and floss after you eat.
  • Sounds like pregnancy related/induced gingivitis.  I think it's due to all the hormones...changes the pH in your mouth.  Talk to your OB or dentist about it...I'm not sure how they treat it.  Maybe a special mouthwash or something.  GL.

  • WOW! I had no idea! Thank you JML for asking this question. I do remember seeing tips saying to take care of your teeth but I just thought it was for ppl who didnt brush. However, I took away from this that you can develop dental issues during pregnancy if not careful.

    And thats good to know.
