Food Allergy

Cucumber allergy/intolerance??

DD is 6 months old today.  She is EBF and eats like a champ.  She has some mild sensitivities to things I eat - too much soy, too many nuts, to many beans.  (I am a vegan but am also pretty sure dairy).  Mostly I have to just make sure I vary my protein sources and don't eat too much of any one thing or she gets very painful gas.  I have food allergies so we have waited until 6 months to introduce food and are doing BLW.  Monday we gave her cucumber (almost totally de-seeded) and banana and cucumber yesterday.  Yesterday I noticed a rash on her bottom localized to her butt hole that looked somewhat "hivey".  Monday night and last night were the most horrible sleeping nights we've had ever.  We moved her to her crib about 3 weeks ago but last night she slept with me.  She woke up at 4:30 in horrible stomach pain and finally had several bouts of explosive green diarrhea with pieces of cucumber.  Her butt is now covered in the hives.  Could this be an allergy or intolerance to cucumber?  I am avoiding an highly allergic foods (not just the ones I am allergic to) but figured cucumber was safe.  Am I fishing for a reason for the horrible sleep or do we have a cucumber problem?

Re: Cucumber allergy/intolerance??

  • You can be allergic to anything so it could be a cucumber allergy.  That said, a cucumber allergy would be pretty rare.  Its very very low on the allergen scale because its protein strand is almost non existent.  I don't know, I guess let her system clear out and maybe try again.

I don't think food trials are ever accurate unless you go back to an elimination diet once a reaction has happened.  Maybe call the pedi and see what they think.

  • did you take the skin off of the cucumber?  The skins of cucumbers can bother lots of people (cause digestion issues, my DH gets awful hearburn).  I have no idea why- but I've heard of it before and I noticed that most restaurants take the skins off of the cucumber before serving it.  Maybe try it that way?

  • Poor thing, sounds like an awful night.

Cucumber (along with most other raw vegetables) are something I need to avoid thanks to my OAS. Once processed I can eat them just fine (I adore pickles), but raw cukes cause me problems. Weird, I know.

Run it by your doctor. Was there anything else new your LO ate that day?
