My gma sent me a text early this morning to let me know that her mother passed away. She was 98 and comatose for over a week, so it is sad, but not unexpected. DH got home from work about an hour later after a very busy night on duty and barely had time to sit down before the fire/EMS radio went off. He wasn't on call, but the ambulance was being sent to my grandparent's house. DH jumped up and went out the door to get to their house. A couple of hours later, DH text me and said they were in the ER and were going to transport my gpa to the ICU in the next (bigger) town. DD and I headed to "town," and met everyone there. We waited several hours to talk to the doctor. It sounds like after some recovery time my gpa will be okay, thankfully. I feel terrible for my gma--first her mother died and then her husband was rushed to the hospital. She was very strong today, but I can imagine it is all hitting her now that she is home alone. More than likely, my gpa will not be able to attend Great-Gma's funeral, as it is in South Dakota. (We live in KS).
One bright spot of the day is that both my gma and gpa thanked DH over and over for coming to their house immediately and driving the ambulance to both hospitals. My gma said he was a great comfort to her and my gpa told DH as we were leaving the hospital tonight that he is "a real life saver."
