Dreft vs. Seventh Generation detergent

Hello All,

I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on detergent to wash baby clothes, sheets, car seat etc.  I have heard great things about both but I wanted to get input on here as to which one to use.  This is my first baby so I want to make sure I'm using the best of the best.

Thank you in advance

Re: Dreft vs. Seventh Generation detergent

  • dreft is a rip off. Anything free of dyes/scents is fine.

  • Dreft is overpriced and has perfumes and dyes. Stay far away.

Seventh Generation is overpriced and not necessary.

Anything that is "free and clear" is perfect for baby. All, Purex, Tide...

  • Neither.  I've used both.  Charlie's soap is awesome.

  • All free & clear is very reasonably priced, especially if you can buy from a wholesaler like Costco, they even send out coupons every once in a while:) I actually started using it for us too and my skin is so much better looking, I never realized that laundry detergent was what was irritating my skin.

  • Ditto everyone.  Don't waste your money.  I've heard that Dreft leaves a weird smell on the clothes too.  Just use something that says "free and clear" and make sure to always do an extra rinse in the cycle.

  • i'm using Dreft (only because it was given to me at my shower), however I'd NEVER purchase it myself. After it's all gone I plan to just use All free & clear or Tide free & clear...whatever just so happens to be on sale at the time

  • I go with Dreft cause it's made by Tide. Tide is what i regularly use for our clothes. For babies clothes, we use the Dreft for the first six months.

  • I agree with previous posters. Dreft is a marketing gimmick targeted at first time moms. It is more expensive, comes in smaller bottles, and has tons of added fragrance that aren't good for baby to smell or have on his/her skin.

We used Purex Free and Clear and All Free and clear detergents with our little one. It is very rare to have an allergic reaction to a mild free and clear detergent. Skip the fabric softener and dryer sheets too. (They make flame retardant clothes flammable, and usually have added fragrance too).

This is what I use for all our laundry now.  A small container lasts forever, since the most you ever use is a tablespoon.  It also works on cloth diapers, which is great because I didn't want to use 2 different detergents.

  • I use 7th generation free and clear for everything and I like it.

  • We use 7th gen as well and it's what we plan to use for our LO. I've heard that it's fine and I really don't want to have to be in the market to buy two brands of detergent. That stuff is pricey!

We have used Dreft, Purex Baby, Free and Clear, and Charlies's soap. Keep in mind that some children and adults are actually sensitive to the whiteners and brighteners added to detergents not just the perfumes and dyes.

  • I hate Dreft. It is insanely expensive and in my opinion does not get any stains out. Not even their stain spray. I always used All Free & Clear or Tide Free & Clear. Anything without dyes and scents is fine for a newborn with sensitive skin.

My daughter had pretty sensitive skin and I started using softener on her clotheswhen she was a month or 2 old- mostly Downy. And it was fine :)

Yep.  After getting this same advice I have just come back from the store exchanged my Dreft for Free and Clear All :)

Also for cleaning baby toys, high chair trays etc I use vinegar and water in a spray bottle.  Vinegar is a wonderful natural cleaner and no harsh chemical worries :)
