Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your toddler still wear onesies?

In the fall/winter, did/will your toddler wear long sleeve, cute onesies with pants? Or is that a baby thing?

I am shopping on the Carter's online sale and am not sure how I feel about onesies.

If they wear a long sleeve shirt and pants, and it's cold out, do you put a long sleeve onesie on under their shirt, or is that also a baby thing?

I like onsies for added warmth (it gets REALLY cold here in the winter). However IMO they would be really impractical for potty-training/trained kids.

  • I hate onesies, and I think once kids are walking they kind of look silly in them.  I have some short sleeve ones I use as warm weather PJs but I don't like to use them as regular clothes.

  • Yep.  I love them as undershirts.  It gets freezing here and I like that extra layer of warmth.  That said- once she's really in to potty training they'll be gone.  I don't think that it's worth trying to teach her to unsnap herself.

  • Yea, the walking around wearing a onesie thing is what I'm not sure of. My girl is not walking yet, but I'm having a hard time picturing her in a onesie and running around this winter. Seems babyish. But I'm all for wearing a onesie under a shirt when it's cold, especially since daycare takes the toddlers outside every day.

  • I'm wondering the same. We have a few right now but don't really use them. But, it's insanely cold here in the winter and we take DS to DCP in a stroller, so I like the idea for a little extra warmth. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, maybe just buy a small pack of them and see if we actually use them.

    (ps, hi! :)

  • Right now, dd isn't wearing any, but in the winter we will go back to the white ones underneath her clothing.  I don't like picking her up and having her back and midriff exposed.

  • We had to reintroduce them when O discovered he could make his penis hang out of his diaper. When he peed on the dog, we had to onesie him up. Problem solved, though sometimes he is able to sneak his hands in the leg holes and get his hands in his diaper.

Hi!!! I can't believe I belong on the toddler board already. Time needs to slow down!

  • Sometimes she does... and I bought a couple of cute Carter's outfits that are a oneside and pants for the Fall.  That being said, I try not to use them all the time b/c I think it's easier when she needs to be changed if it's just pants to contend with rather than unsnapping the onesie, etc.

  • Now that Tegan is walking, I am not a fan of the way a onesie and pants look on her. I bought her a few onesies in 18 month size and she's only worn a couple of them because I'm just not a fan of the look. Fortunately, I have some friends who have LOs who will fit into them next summer.

However, if it was really cold outside (it rarely gets truly cold here) then I'd probably put a short sleeve or long sleeve white onesie under a sweater, if we were going to be outside for an extended period of time. As far as daycare goes, which is where she wears a majority of her clothes, I don't think I'd send her with a onesie underneath a top. I'd be afraid that she'd get too warm while inside. We're babies here when it comes to the cold and they wouldn't even take the kids outside to play if it was going to be in the 40s or lower.

  • LO lives in the onepeice romper style ones in the summer.  I love them because they are lightweight and are shorts and a t-shirt all in one.

I also use longsleeve onesies under t-shirts to layer on colder days and in the fall.

    But, that is about it.

  • Not anymore. We are PTing and I don't see them being practical.
imageimageBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I think of onesies as more babyish.  DS still has a couple that he was given, but he really only wears them to bed.
image Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I was never a fan of onesies as part of outfits, except on newborns and really young infants. Once they are walking, I think it definitely looks very babyish.

DD did wear plain white onesies under her clothes and pj's in the winter for extra warmth, but I think by the time winter rolls around this year I will just buy her those tank/camisole style undershirts.

  • Sometimes, usually with overalls. He wears a lot of long sleeve shirts and T's now, hoodies, etc. I don't buy him onsies really anymore.

  • I put onesies on DD1 until probably 2 years. I always had a short sleeved onesie under her outfits to help keep her belly covered in the cold winters.

  • I never liked them in the first place, and really think they look funny now.  I never tuck in my shirts, so it seems funny to have DS "tuck in" his shirt now that he's walking.  We only have 2 onesies currently, and I only use them with overalls now.

  • DS still has a few. I will definitely use them for layers come winter, it can get really cold.

Occassionally he will wear an outfit or two now with a onesie, my little guy has no butt and some of his outfit pants don't fit, by wearing the onesie the pants seem to stay better. He is all torso and grows out of sizes in the tops, onesies, before he grows out of the pants. I see no problem with onesies.

  • I love onesies. I hate when you see skin between pants & shirt so both my kids always have a onesie (even if they have a shirt on top of that).

  • We use onesies everyday here. It's winter and hovering around the 35 mark so it's cold, cold, cold. DS only ever wears onesies as underwear though. I think they're weird, like a PP said, as a tucked in t-shirt. Right now DS is wearing a l/s onesie, a l/s t-shirt and a pair of jeans. He's still crawling too so extra important.

As soon as we start PT, hopefully in springtime, we'll stop using them. Next winter we'll just buy a few s/s merino t-shirts that he can wear as vests, under his shirts.

  • He still wore onesies and I still have some that he'll wear this fall/winter.  This year though, I'll probably just use the long sleeve onesie under normal clothes.

  • I still put her in short-sleeved and long-sleeved onesies, but only to wear underneath another shirt. I think it looks odd to have toddlers in just a onesie and pants.

  • My DD is 23 months old and still wears onsie at night and on days were we think she needs one.At a year she was still wearing them and I plan on having some for her for the fall/winter.Even if she wears a long sleeve shirt , I want one underneath that, she tends to pick up her shirt and I like for her to have some coverage.

She is also like me and is not that fond of sweaters-so this way we have layers but it is not too bulky. Also if it is a nice day in the fall-I can just put a cute onsie on her with pants and her jacket.

  • No, I gave up the onesie a long time ago.  I found them to be a PITA.  Plus, we live in FL so it is not like DD needs extra warmth.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • She wore them until it got warm this summer (17 mos).  I really liked it so that her back and belly weren't hanging out in the cold.  By this fall, she'll be too big for any of the onsies on the market.  If she wasn't, she'd be in them until we potty train.

  • occasionally she does, but certainly not every day. she is in the habit of pulling her shirts up to show off her bellybutton lately.

i put her in rompers too. it's hot outside dudes! lol.

My daughter hasn't regularly worn onesies in a long time. I think we probably stopped after last summer, so around 9 months or so? She has a few, but she doesn't wear them often. The don't fit her very well. She's kind of tall and thin and has a long torso. I also kind of think they're a baby thing.

  • For some reason, I think toddlers in onesies look silly, but I still buy them because it seems like I can't find too many shirts that will fit DS and look cute.  I think in the winter, it's a little different because it keeps air off their bellies and it might keep them warmer.  But right now, it's hot, and I wish I had more shirts that weren't onesies.

  • Nope. I have a difficult enough time trying to get DD dressed in regular clothes let alone onsies. There's no way she'd sit still long enough for them and, at 18 months, I don't really see the point.
