tea drinkers??

I think this has been a post topic before but right now I want a cup of tetley decaf tea and I dont know if this is ok. Now, before I got pregnant, I was drinking green tea, which I have since heard is not great for me (who knew). Any tea drinkers out there who can shed light for me??

Re: tea drinkers??

  • That should be fine. Ive heard about the green tea too. My doc even said a small amount of caffeine should be ok.

  • You can safely have up to 200 mg of caffeine. Decaf tea is fine.
  • I asked my Dr about green tea, specifically, since it's what I drink, and she said it was perfectly fine... :) It's even lower in caffeine than black tea (25mg for green, more like 50 for black!), so as long as you're not having, like, ten cups of it a day, you should be fine!

  • Decaf tea should be fine.  They don't advise green tea because it impacts your ability to absorb folic acid, which is very important for the LO's development.  Even a cup of tea with caffeine is fine.  Just keep it in moderation.  There are some herbal teas you are supposed to watch out for, but since I don't drink herbal tea, I'm not sure what ones those are.  Enjoy your teatime!

  • My OB said one cup of tea/coffee is okay a day... but no herbal teas and that was what I was drinking everyday... so I am tea free for the next 7 months. It is all worth it though :-)

  • I live in the south, so sweet iced tea is a staple! DH used to drink a gallon every 2 days, I've tried to cut back, but it's hard! I really need to switch to decaf, but I just keep forgetting to buy decaf tea bags at the grocery store. oops. Decaf tea should be fine. My doc was fine with me having a couple glasses of regular iced tea a day.

yeah I drink regular tea every morning. As PPs said, its OK to have regular non-decaf coffee and tea, as long as its not too much each day. 1 cup is totally fine.

  • As with most "do/don'ts" there seems to be a lot of disagreement about what's okay and how much is okay. My MW told me that different doctors/experts will tell you different things... anything from 150 to 300 mg of caffeine. So I think the key is moderation, as other posters have mentioned. I'm just erring on the side of caution and consuming very little caffeine. :)

  • I'm not sure where I heard this, or if it's even true, might be worth googling, but I heard that if you brew a cup of regular tea and then throw it out, the second cup you make with that same tea bag will have less caffeine.

Okay, I just did a quick google search and found this:

Respected physician and health advocate, Dr. Andrew Weil, claims that you can retain green tea?s many health benefits and lose the caffeine by throwing away the first infusion. Weil suggests steeping the tea for 45 seconds, pitching the first cup of liquid, then adding more hot water to the leaves and steeping as usual. According to Weil, up to 80 percent of green tea?s caffeine will be missing from the second infusion without the loss of taste or aroma.
