Nutramigen Fail!

My LO has been extremely gassy since she was born.  We've tried tons of things to help.  We were on Gentlease and the gas seemed to be better.  Not perfect but better.  My LO started becoming fussy when eating and became especially fussy at night.  We took her to the pedi and he decided she has Colic and suggested she go on Nutramigen or Alimentum.  We tried Nutramigen since we had used Enfamil products up to that point.  She's been on it for 4 days now and everything seems 10 times worse.  I didn't think she was colicky before but now I know she is.  Since we started the Nutramigen she's started fussing from dinnertime till 1 or 2.  Her gas is much worse.  I don't know why Nutramigen would make her feel this way and we haven't changed anything else.  So I'm not sure what to do at this point.  Not sure if I should go back to the Gentlease, try Alimentum, something soy-based or another brand sensitive formula.  I'll call the pedi about this but I know they'll have me come in and just tell me to try different formulas becuase that's what they've already done.  I'm just not sure what formula to try next.  Any thoughts? TIA

  • Did she have any other symptoms with the Gentlease? I'm guess I'm just surprised that your pedi so readily assumed she had colic and said to go on Nutramigen. Nutramigen (although the can says for colic) is a hypoallergenic formula that babies who have a milk/soy protein allergy use. I know because LO is on this. He was extremely fussy during eating but also cried out in pain and had bloody stools. Does your DS have any of those symptoms? Or does she have hives or rashes? If not, then perhaps you could try Alimentum (also for milk/soy protein allergies). I have heard that if people have a hard time with Nutramigen that Alimentum works well.

ETA: Oh also, if you stick with either of those, since they're so expensive, ask your pedi for a prescription and check with your insurance to see if they will cover it. Many do and it can save you a TON of money.

  • Give it a few more days. Our pedi told us it would take 10 days for there to be a noticiable difference. She was right, after about a week and a half, I could tell a big difference. And as pp said, we added gas drops as well. He is much happier now. Good luck!

  • Looks like she's going thru her 6 week growth spurt, which if you ticker is right, could be starting about now. I would listen to the PP and wait a few more days unless different symptoms show up. Good luck with your LO, gassiness and pain are so tough to relieve for them :-(
