Your first thought on the name Case/Casey

So DH and I were pretty set on the whole Cole/Colton/Colt thing. We grew pretty attached to it. However, I now know of 5 other mommies with a Cole or Colton in my area that are either pregnant or recently born. I really do NOT want this kid to have the most common name in his class.

So another name DH and I both love is Casey. We like the option of calling him Case or Casey, whatever seems to fit him better. The problem is, having a masculine sounding name was one of our top priorities. Obviously Casey is also a girl name, but seems to me to be popular for girls born in the 80's and not so much any more.  What do you think?

  • When I hear Casey I think girl... I like Case a lot though.

  • I love the name Case/Casey... While I have a female cousin with the name who is 18 (and whose Mom regrets naming her that, btw) I think of it as a male name.

  • The first person that comes to mind for me is Casey Anthony...I do like Case though=)

  • Honestly, I don't find it very masculine ... but strangely enough, not particularly feminine either.

Really, my one stand out thought on it is Casey and Finnegan from Mr. Dress Up (yup, that probably dates me).

Ick! This never even crossed my mind. Barf.

  • I like it!!

We have friends who named their little boy Casey and I went to school with a (male) Casey so I always think of it as a boy's name.  Andplusalso, there's that whole Casey At The Bat story which I think is what makes me think it's a boy's name too.

When I heard Casey I also think of Casey Anthony but I do LOVE Case. Is there another name that Case could be short for? (Without being overly dramatic and making up a random one?)

  • Just due to the popularity of the case, I immediately thought Casey Anthony as well.  We use to have a dog named Casey.  I think it's a great name, but right now its tainted.

  • I like Case but I like Chase better...

If we have a girl, we are going to name her Kennedy Claire, but DH insists he's going to call her KC (Casey)

I can't think of one... After the whole Casey Anthony thing, I'm thinking of going with Case as the formal name and maybe a nn of Casey if we feel like it. Hmmmm...

Also a suggestion...do you and DH like the name Carson? I love it, but a friend at work just named their son that so it's off my list currently.
  • I love it.  I know of a family in our town that named their little boy Casey (after the dad) and called him Case.  I think it's original and modern without sounding pretentious and trendy.

Casey Anthony didn't come to mind at all...

  • Casey was one of my first choices for a boy name... but DH kiboshed it.... lame! I have known many more male Casey's then female..... it's quite a popular Dutch male name!
  • I like Casey.  I actually think of it as a boy name more than a girl name.  One of the few girl Caseys I know it actually named after a man, so there you go!

Casey would be on my list except one of DH's cousins has a son named Casey, so it's taken.  We call him Case all the time.

  • My Husbands name is Casey and I have always called him Case. He said he was never picked on that it was more of a boys name were he grew up in Philly. It was not until he moved to NC that he met alot of girl Kacy's. I am bias but I love the name
  • I took my nephew to eat the other night and he was playing in the play yard area with a little boy named Cannon.  I thought it was so cool!

    Other unique "C" names=

PP said Carson, which I like; Cade, Callan, Calder (My BFF has a guy friend with this name and I always thought it was cool!); Coby, Colin/Collin (was on my short list!); Not sure if you said Colton; Cullen, Cason (Case for short).

Not sure if you were meaning to stick to the "C's" but maybe this will help inspire you!

  • I think Casey Anthony. Sad...but true.

  • I have a good friend named Casey from high school, who is male, and he hates his name, and he ultimately decided to go by his middle name which was more masculine. Personally i think it is very girly sounding.  Of course your baby may feel differently about it, but im giving my opinion/experience.

  • I went to school with a boy named Casey, so I immediately think boy.  But if you are worried about the popularity of it being a girl name, you could always use Cason with the nn Case.  This is the name at the top of my list if we ever have another boy.

  • My husband's name is Casey and it technically a boys name.  I love the meaning of "brave protector" which I feel is very masculine.  Pretty much any girl I have met with the name have it spelled with a K so therefore I tend to think of it as a boy name spelled with a C and a girl name spelled with a K.

Just curious, who says Casey is "technically" a boys name?

Nat, I'm loving Case. Wicked cool name. And my nephew is Colton but the nn's for that name are limited.

  • It's according to all of the Irish name websites I looked at when looking for an Irish name for my baby.  All of them said it's root was in the masculine but can be gender neutral.

  • I also thought Casey Anthony. And then I thought, "Nat is having a boy isn't she?" So to me it's a feminine name. I like Case though.

  • What about Colson?  Similar to Colton, but not the same, and unique enough that there most likely won't be more than one in his class.  Colson was on our very short boy name list.  We narrowed it down to that and one other name before choosing the other one for this LO!  :)

  • I love the name Casey for a boy. I had a very good friend in HS who was Casey, so I have great associations with the name.

  • I actually really like the name. However, it is my golden retriever's name, who is a boy, so that's my first thought on it.

So my first thought was Casey Jones from the ballad of Casey Jones- so not a bad association and that is a male association.

I think of it as a boy's name, but I think of it as a nickname so not very masculine in that sense. If you could come up with a more formal name, and then call him Casey, I think that would age better for when he goes out to work as an adult.

Also, one option would be to come up with a K first name and a C middle name and call him KC.

  • I'm super late to the party here, but just wanted to throw this out there. I had a friend whose boyfriend's was named Cason. I had never heard it before and thought it was a really neat name. Just another option...
