Tips for flying with a 13 month old

We are taking our first flight with MJD next week and I would love any tips from experience Mamas when it comes to flying & traveling.  Things to definitely have on board, ways to keep DS entertained, etc.  My biggest concern is DH's typical way of running late to the airport.

TIA!

  • Enough diapers/water/milk/snacks - more than you think you'll need. Books and light toys.  Extra clothes for you and baby.  I also load up my iPod with videos of Yo Gabba Gabba and Sesame Street *just in case*!

  • We just fly with both our boys to seattle:

~ipad and dvd player - we only have a few things on our ipad so we brought the dvd player as well. This was pretty much what Bailey did the whole time. He didn't really care about anything else.

~snacks and a sippy cup - I brought Bailey's empty and they had water, juice, milk on the plane. He also loved the cookies from delta

~Bryce - I brought cheerios in a snack cup and he loved it. We also put him in his carseat which was good b/c there was no other way he would have slept comfortable on the plane. We let him just sit in it when the fasten seat belt sign was off.

We just went with Reese right before her 1st birthday. We were terrified because she is in that stage where she doesn't like to be held and just likes to GO! She loves loves the wiggles though so we brought that on a portable dvd player. She also loves to be read to so we did that as well. I also had 2 carry ons...her diaper bag full of diapers/snacks/drink etc and another bag full of toys and books. whenever i thought she was getting bored with one, i'd pull out another. she did great and we had several people come up to us after each flight saying how great she was.

Perfect advice. Pack more than you think you'll need in your carry on, then pack even more. An iPod or portable DVD player is priceless.

  • We just got back from a trip and Harlie got an ear infection the day before we left.  My cousin told me to put cups over her ears during take off and landing and it actually worked.  My brother, who is a dr. was skeptical--he said in theory it would work to equalize the pressure but you'd have to really keep the cups tight to her head--we were able to do this by giving her a bottle at the same time, which also helps with ears.

As for being occupied on the plane, both ways we brought a brand new small toy and book so she was intrigued by sometime new.  As pp's have mentioned, many more snacks than you think you will need.

  • Thanks Ladies!  I'm sure DH is going to think I'm nuts with having so much stuff, but he'll be happy in the long run!
