Breastfeeding

Is this normal?

Little before my DS turned 3 weeks he started wanting to eat all the time. I figured this was the start of his 3 week growth spurt. Well, now he is little over 4 weeks old and hasn't stopped wanting to eat all the time. I am lucky if he goes 2 hours between each feeding, even at night. I try to pump throughout the day and now when I do I barely get anything out. I am worried about if he is getting enough from me. Is this normal?

Re: Is this normal?

  • It's normal for him to keep wanting to eat, and the pumping might be taking supply that your LO wants/needs.  I would put a hold on pumping too much and just try to keep up with baby.

  • Sounds normal... the first couple months can be super demanding until baby's tummy gets bigger and they can go longer between feeds. My LO still eats every 2 hrs in the day but around 6 weeks started sleeping for a 6hr and then 3hr stretch at night. Don't worry about how little you get when pumping, your baby is more efficient than the pump... if he's gaining weight and has lots of wet diapers all is good.

Yup,  normal. My DS didn't go longer than 2 hours during the day and 3 hours at night until he was 6 weeks old. His tummy is tiny and what you pump isn't a good indicator of your supply. Is he producing lots of wet/dirty diapers? Is he gaining weight? If so, your supply is fine.
